Two days ago my male betta Duke died. Apart from being sad, I am now left with his empty tank. As much as I love bettas, I want to get something different for a change.

The tank is 2 US g (10 litres), heated, lit and 3-way filtered with some java fern and amazon sword. It only has one other inhabitant, my little mystery snail Wayne. Wayne can be moved to another tank if needed.

I'm at a loss: there doesn't seem to be anything I can keep in it. Anyone have any suggestions? :dunno:

I wouldn't personally keep any fish other than a betta in it cos I think theyd want more space to swim around. How about shrimp, or african dwarf frogs?

any tank less than 10 gallons can and should only house a betta.

How about a couple of sea monkies? They can be great entertaining pets and can even be trained to do tricks (so it says on the packet of instant sea monkies my son got last christmas) and to top it all off they will think that a 2 gallon tank is heaven compared to the usual 1/4 pint containers the kit comes with. A extra added bonus is that if you get fed up with them you can simply tip them into your fish tank where your fish will find them to be yummy treats.

Hi SPLiSH :)

A planted 2 gallon tank would make an excellent home for 2 or 3 African Dwarf Frogs. They would think it was a palace!

These are very interesting and easy to care for pets, and I think you would like them. Here's a link with lots of information about them:

Thanks for the help, everyone. The ADFs sound like a great idea, but I'm not sure if they are legal here in Australia. Any Aussies know if they are? :dunno: If they are, I will definately get some. If not, I may get some Formosa livebearers. But I'd prefer and ADF.

There's also some killies you could probably keep but you'll need to research the different species first. I think h. formosa are a good idea though - but watch you don't get over-loaded with fry if you get both sexes.

Thanks sylvia, I'll look into the killies. I can't find any info on keeping ADFs in Australia, so I'll assume they're illegal. :-( I like Australe killies so maybe I can get my hands on some of those. Otherwise, it'll be h. formosa.

I just discovered ADFs are illegal in Australia. I guess it's for the best though: last time someone introduced a foreign amphibian (cane toad) it got out of control! I'm goona go for the h. formosa.
