I recently bought some Anacharis for my tank from Aqua Essentials, just wondering if there is anything to do to the plant before putting it in amongst the fish! Just the old rinse with old tank water and trim any dead or rotting ends?

Thanks.

Pretty much. And pick off any snails and eggs if you don't want snails. You can also do a dilute bleach or potassium permanganate soak if you want to reduce your chances of introducing snails, bugs, or algae to the tank.

sorry to hijack your thread awilson but i have a question for katty

i have read about bleach bath for plants but could not find a site that gave me good solid instructions on how much bleach to water, how long to dip, which parts to dip

how do you do it?

too late for me now really i have my tanks planted up but if i get more this will stick in my head :D

sorry for hijacking again

@Ashley:

I've only done PP dips, bleach sounds too harsh for plants, and with the how much plants and shipping costs I don't really want to kill them all :X Didn't kill the snails though, and I already had some nasty algae from plants I didn't soak anyways so I don't know if it killed any of that.

Anyhow, the place I ordered my plants from sent me excerpts from this page when I asked about plant dips. You have to scroll down a bit to get to it. Plant dips Everywhere else I've looked agrees on 1 part bleach to 19 parts water. I've seen a few different soaking times though, anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. I guess you'd have to adjust for how robust the plant is and how infested with stuff it is.

ta very much :good: does seem a bit harsh on plants might but a cheap plant and give it a go see what happens :)

Oh yes I forgot about snails and eggs! I did contaminate my tank with a snail from a plant about a week ago but the snail (only small) began crawling up the glass and my oranda ate it :S
Are there any benefits of having snails or are they just a general nuisance!
I don't think ill bother with bleach, ill just rinse and trim, aqua essentials is a pretty trusted plant supplier after all!
Thanks guys.

snails are not a nuisance if you maintain your tank properly and do not overfeed in fact they help by eating bits of left over food and algae

i have snails from plants in my big tank (Think they may be bladder snails) that came on plants i dont have a problem with them at all i just wondered about the bleach bath :) you will only get a population boom if you overfeed your tank

for example i have a 60 liter tank set up which i purposly over feed for my guppy fry and there are literally hundreds of snails in there eating up all the left over food which i dont mind it keeps my water clean. im going to get some shrimp to do the job instead of the snails so the snail population will start to die off :)

edit: i have also purposly put snails in my tank big tank (2 apple snails) and since i dont over feed they dont even breed

Ah ok, thanks Ash. Learn something new everyday!
Would 2 apple snails be ok in a 25g with 2 fancy goldies? And how much do they generally cost?
