Have you checked the bottom of your shoe?
I guess this is geared towards the younger population of TFF like 10 and up. Do you have any plans for college/university or even a job that involves fish?

Personally, I plan to own a pet store that specializes in tropical fish (not saltwater, too stressful with little kids wanting a nemo. :p) but also has other animals like dogs, cats, birds and rodents. My best friend is also interested in helping me with my 'dream' so I've dubbed her co-owner of my 'pet store.' :p
I even have plans for my betta barracks drawn up. I plan to take a one or two year course on business at my local college and work at my LPS for a few months and then buy some little place to turn into my pet store. As far as funding, I'll probably have to take a large loan and break into my savings account. :/

I wasn't sure if this would go here or general chat as general chat's description says for non-fish related things.

Looking forward to reading your replies!

Ill be getting a job at a lfs store with a friend. It would eb cool to open my own fish shop someday....

I am 17 and I always wanted to own my own fish store. I wanted to have this huge back room where all it is is empty tanks that are already cycled (fishless cycling) and so when someone comes in and buys a tank they can buy the filter and gravel that is already cycled so they can add fish immediately.

I also love computers and web designing and stuff like that so I would have a computer at the front of the store (away from the tanks and water) where you could design your "perfect" tank. You could pick the stand color, tank design, substrate, and even fish. It would be like a click and drag thing where you drag the items into the tank. It would also tell you what fish would be compatible with other fish. Let's say you pick an oscar to go in your "perfect" 100 gallon you set up on the computer, then you pick a guppy to go with it. A message will pop-up and alert you that that fish will not go well with the previous fish you picked. I think it will be fun and educational. People can learn more about fish while they are making their own tank. That way they can see how everything looks BEFORE they buy it. :D

I think I would only sell freshwater fish though. I am not that experienced or interested in saltwater fish. Although my boyfriend loves them so maybe he could run that department. :p

What do you think? Would you come to my store? :p

Im getting a job this summer at my LFS. Im 16 and would love to open my own lfs but sucess percentage is too low and not worth it.

I disagree. Fish shops make a pretty profit if run well. I know the guys at Big Als are happy rolling in cash. The one guy breeds his own Angels, and sells them for 5$ each (pretty cheap). He says he has turned over his personal costs about 10 times in a few years. Not bad. We are sucked into a sale too easily!

Yes key word once they get running, the percentage of shops that actually get running good is low. If you do they can be very profitable.

i am working hard to be a marine biologist, i even have work experience at a marine education centre in october, can wait.

You would make more profit I think if you actually took time into setting up each tank and making it suitable for each species of fish. That way they would feel more at home and maybe breed. Then you could keep breeding them and sell the offspring, which practically would be 100% profit. Well except for the food and stuff.

Its cool to here that some of you are wanting to become marine biologists like me!

I recently finished high school, and applied for marine biology at Flinders University, and i was accepted. As some of you may know. :p . I am starting my uni course this coming monday and im freakin......

Here is a link for my course: http://www.scieng.flinders.edu.au/courses/marinebiol/

::strech, recline, sigh:: that's the retirement plan... gonna earn a lot of money, and then once i quit working, open a LFS and slowly watch the cash trickle out for the next 20 years...

LOL, I was thinking about this earlier..... I'd like to get a job at pets at home when I'm 16, not that I buy fish from there EVER, but to generally earn a bit of cash while sneakily telling people 'no you can't put a goldfish in that 4.5 litre tank, try a betta instead'.... And I can also look after bunnies and hamsters, so thats OK.
Then, I'd like to start my own fish shop :) I'd try to breed what I could, I mean, your BOUND to make a profit when you have a tank of platys breeding like mad with no help and you sell them on for £1.25 each! If you bred bettas, you can a lot of babies from their spawns ususally, and you wouldn't need to worry to much about having loads of jars because you could put them in with the cories or something they won't kill.
