I've got a few pink apple snails which haven't laid eggs while I've had them. Recently, they seem to spending a bit of time locking onto one another, and thrashing about a bit, and I wondered if they were mating or if it was some kind a mollusc ultimate fighting type thing they were getting involved in?

I know a few people on here have bred them successfully and I wouldn't have thought it would be too challenging to get snails to breed, am I missing something regarding preferred conditions etc?

Ive got a 180 litre community.

Applesnail.net is a great little site for info. I can't find the site I used to look at which had photos of a breeding tank etc.

Oh I found this...
here :D

I had fruity applesnails but they never laid eggs unfortunately :(

My Apple snails only really started to breed when they reached the 10p size. I have the large ones in the 4ft tank and have a seperate 60 litre for the babies. Both tanks have live plants and are kept at 25dg with weekly water changes. They don't allways lay the eggs straight away after coupling. I move the larger ones into the 60 litre when I'm wanting more little ones. Currently I have many babies and 4 egg clusters on the go. Oh yes apart the the algae I feed them algae pellets and bloodworm pellets, they love em, but do make alot of mess. :good:

Mine lay eggs straight away after a water change. I did a 15% water change last night and there were two batches laid this morning. :hey:

So does the locking together and thrashing around sound like mating then?

Don't know about the thrashing about  but locking together, probably yes. The eggs are usually laid above the water line near to the top and are a pinkish colour.

They're properly going for it like! Shaking about all over the place! Thats why I thought they might've been scrapping at first.

I've never seen mine scrapping, crawl over each other and locking yes. Mine can be some times very naughty and there's a group of them locking

As mentioned above, they will lay their eggs above the water line, either on the glass or the underside of the hood of the tank

I remember when I saw my first clutch, I thought it was some sort of Alien thing, it's amazing how quickly they grow.

So THAT'S what they were up to! I saw 4 apple snails (varying from 2-3 cm diameter)lined up in a row one on top of the other like 4 parked cars in my tank yesterday. Wondered what was going on but they were very quiet. the whole group hardly moved at all before splitting up, no thrashing about in my case.If they were mating and do lay eggs
How soon can I expect eggs
What do snail eggs look like
What do I do with them (leave them on glass, move to fry tank as eggs or when they hatch?
What do baby snails eat?

They are a pinkish clump laid out of water up near on on the lid. I've only caught snails actually laying eggs a couple of times, normally I just come across them. They don't allways hatch and sometimes the egg clumps just fall off into the tank. If you do have hatchlings I have found they will feed on just about the same as adults. In my 60litre snail tank, I dont clean the class as much as the 4ft so they all have plenty of algae to eat. I have found the most successful eggs to hatch have been the ones laid halfway between the water line and light unit. This gives them the right mixture of heat and moisture. Hope that helps. :good:
