I keep angel on and off a few years now. I noticed sometimes they are very hardy, but sometimes seems really fragile.

Maybe because they are big or other reason, it is very easy to notice they are distressed. And according to my experience, the more you treat them, the quicker they will die. If you leave them alone, most of them can recover.

recently i have 3 angel died in different tanks , different time, but all similar way.

e.g i will notice one of a group angels suddenly looks distress, it might be very healthy the day before, but now all his fin is clamped, hide in the corner. It might still eating, but seems something bother it, it may shake his fin suddenly try to get rid of something. at first i thought some bacteria is biting him or wot. But all the other angel looks fine.

if i leave it alone, it will survive, but may look worse. If i change water, all the other angel seems happy, but this one will die the following day.

it happened 3 times now. i was puzzled.

1) why the angel will suddenly become distress, is it really some bacteria or something else like nitrogen ?
2) why they always die after water change? i normally just use tap water, heat to the right temperature, i do not treat the water, as it is only 15% of tank size water change. and most fish donot bother at all. maybe the distressed angel is too weak?

Many thanks

To be honest, I would put it down to this, did you cycle the tank in the beginning? Although thats irrelevant if your not treating the water - it doesnt matter how big the change is, even if a 10% you should still use dechlor - and I would advise against heating the water

Many thanks

yes, the tank is cycled ofcourse, as many fish live there happily. i heat the water because i do not want the temperature of water is too different.

i know many ppl just use tap water for water change. i just wonder why is so fussy this situation.

Sorry, I didnt mean to ask such a stupid question, but it does happen! Theres nothing wrong with using tap water - its just needs dechlorinating is all, if you dont, it can and will kill.

As for the temperature, if you are doing small water changes such as 15%, the water going in isnt too much of a drop

Its not a fussy situation, you asked for advice, and I gave mine is all - tap water is fine, I and millions of other fish keepers use it, just treat it before it goes in

Could be something in your water that is stressing them out. pH spike maybe, lots of chlorine or chloramine or other chemicals I am not 100% sure. The odd thing is normally there will be signs of stress in all fish if theres something in the tap water. I believe darting and gill irritation can sometimes be put down to chlorine, but I would also just make sure they don't have any gill flukes (although a water change probably wouldn't effect this it's better to be on the safe side.) How long has this been happening for? Have you had any large amounts of rainfall in your area lately?

if it is gill fluke, then all the fish should have problem breathe, but they look normal. even this distress one, it breathe normal, it just clmaped the fins. and it is always happen to be angel. maybe other fish is not so sensitive or it may not look so obvious.

and i have see this happened many time. if i leave it alone, many of them will recover. but normally i will get worried after a few days, i will try to treat it, and it normally will speed up and kill it.
