Does anyone know of any eel like fish to go at ease with my violet goby? any replies will be great :)

That's a good call, if you have the space. While territorial, they don't fight to the death, and watching them display to one another is very cool.

Buying a bunch of PVC tubes and cutting them to size is a good way to make sure each fish has a burrow of its own.

Otherwise, I'd consider spaghetti eels, if you can find them. They do well in low-salinity brackish and are totally peaceful. Freshwater morays are similar but larger, and arguably need full-stength marine when mature. They can be a bit aggressive though. Ropefish are a third option, but they need only very slightly brackish water, and so aren't ideal tankmates for violet gobies. Ditto spiny eels.

Cheers,

Neale

what about another violet goby?

i do like the idea of a spiny eel and another violet goby, my tank is only 1.006 so it should be fine for a spiny eel. but i really like the spaghetti eel idea :D ............just dont know where to find them....

A few months back they had some at the Aquatic Design Centre in London, so if you're in London, you could just ask them to get some more. Moringua raitaborua seems to be the most common species. Some tropical fish shops will order stuff in especially for you, so it's always worth asking.

The Aqualog brackish book has a short section on these fish, if you need additional information.

Neale

no i live in texas, umm ya ill ask petco and petsmart if they will ship and if not ill order them, o thanks for the link its very hard finding info for this species :good:

Yesh. I have a dragon goby myself.

Shamefully, he's not in the best conditions he could be in. Right now he resides in a 10 gallon community, but he's only about 4 inches for the time being. Problem is, I can only do 1 tbsp of salt per 5 gallons or it'd kill the tetra's ect..

I totally got duped by a line on a webstie. They had so much accurate info on the dragon goby. Then it says, "they're so peaceful, they can be kept with neon tetra!" Sigh~ that line totally got me. Good thing is, the store didn't bother to keep it in salt water, so the change has actually helped him, and his golden sheen has become much more apparent :D

Now, i did do a lot more reasearch before and afterward.
Apparently, the site that says you can keep them with neon tetra thinks you can keep them with each other, and sure enough they look kinda peaceful.

But everywhere else I've read, unless you have a realllly big tank, your dragon gobys will end up skirmishing.
Now if you don't mind that, go for it.

But again, many sites say they perfer to be the sole bottomdweller, and that they dislike shings shaped like themselves. Due to their blindnessish, they may take it to be a threat, such as another one of themselves. And their teeth, when angered, can be deadly.... So yesh....

Just saying, I'd go for more peaceful tank mates if i was fully brackish. If i had it to do over again, I'd probably be doing a puffer, such as a dwarf. Probably not a figure 8... but if i found out they somehow wouldn't eat bumble bee gobies.... (which take mega extensive care. live foods only). And so on.

Oh yeah. And texas rocks. I live there too.

Also - while i bought the aquarium salt for the goby, i asked if aquarium salt would effect tetras at all. They said no. Meaning, they either didn't care about the goby being put in with tetra... or... they were just really stupid and not putting 2 and 2 together.

If you mean a spiny eel -- Macrognathus and Mastacembalus spp. -- these are only marginal brackish water fish. SG 1.005 tops, and that's only for certain species (e.g., Macrognathus aral). Most are strictly freshwater fish, some actually need acidic, very soft water to do well.

Cheers,

Neale

a spiney nose eel will be good, but they mostly hide

Assuming that you have Gobioides broussonnetii, you have quite a few options for "eel-like fish". Gobioides broussonnetii is a brackish to marine fish, and in aquaria can be kept in anything from 1.005 to full marine conditions. The aforementioned spiny eels, spaghetti eels, or ropefish will do fine with violet gobies so long as the SG stays below 1.005. Note that while many Gobioides broussonnetii specimens do fine in lower salinities, some do not. If your violet goby starts to look slimy and or sluggish in water with a SG of 1.005 or lower, this is a sure sign that they need to be in higher salinities.

If you move your tank into high-end brackish you have a few options for eel-like species so long as you have a large enough tank. One that comes to mind is Uropterygius concolor, which will do fine in 1.010 and up. I have one of these eels in my own brackish tank, rather peaceful for a moray, great choice. Another is Gymnothorax tile. They are rather common, and will do fine in 1.010 and up, but be warned that they are rather aggressive and territorial. Gymnothorax fimbriatus is another option, but I do not believe they are in the aquarium trade. Congrogadus subducens is another choice. This is actually a dottyback and not a eel, but looks exactly like a eel. They are extremely aggressive, but if you have a large enough tank and territory they probably wont pick on a violet goby.

There are plenty that I have left out though, a google on brackish eels could yield some more options.

thanks, he dosent look slimy or slugish , good thing. anyway thanks foe the eel listings! i will look into them
