hiya, all of my female guppies are pregnant, i brought a breeding tank but i dont know when its a good idea to seperate the females and put them in it? are there any tell tale signs that its not long till she drops so to speak?!!!!! one of them is starting to look very pregnant, i put her in it for the past two days, but still nothing, so i let her out again as i didnt think it was good for her to be in there for so long

can any one give me some clues please?

Thanks in advance

Sarah

i have also wanted to know this as all 5 of my females are very heavely pregnant, but in some of my females if u look closely u can see the frys eyes witch mean they could drop any day now.
also if a female swims away from the others and does not like them being near her that mean she can be in labour or close to giveing birth.
do u mean u have a breeding trap or a giveing birth tank?

Once they are pregnant (now), you can move them to a birthing tank anytime. This will let them relax and you can pamper them, resulting in larger spawns and usually better viability. I would use a minimum of a 5 gallon tank, and plan to remove the female the day after she starts dropping young. Any losses to cannabalism will be more than made up for by the increased size of the spawn.

With good conditioning, the female will get HUGE. You think she looks pregnant now, just wait! Plus, once she does drop, mark your calander. Guppies should drop fry every 25 - 35 days, so after 3 or 4 spawns, it will be easy to have tanks ready at the right time. Don't worry if you can't save every spawn. Guppies live for several years, and older females produce larger broods anyways.

I do this with my 'guppy types', and get 20 - 50 fry each month from each female. I keep the fry in the smaller tanks until they are 1 - 2 months old, and then distrbute them or return them to the main tank. Only have 2 tanks? You need more!

Alternatively, lots of folks just keep a colony of guppies in a 25 - 50 gallon tank and let them increase in numbers naturally. This works, with the key being a large tank with lots of plants, live or plastic. I have done this successfully in a 15 gallon, but cannabalism was high and numbers increased quite slowly.

Also, use sponge filters rather than power filters to avoid fry being mulched by the impellers. ATI Hydrosponges are excellent and inexpensive.

Good luck,

will a bubble filter be ok?
There's nothing wrong with the old corner boxes with the floss and carbon. They were a good idea 50 years ago, and still work just as well. Your fry may swim in there, but there is no real current and more importantly, no impeller to chop them up.

Sponges are nice because they are easy to clean, and hydrosponges in particular are incredibly efficient. I have used power filters for 20 years since getting away from undergravel but last year, a friend finally convinced me to try some sponges. I have since switched all but 2 of my tanks to them. There are no power cords, water changes are easier with no filter to restart, and the noise difference is also incredible... I have a rack of 13 tanks that are quieter than a single Aquaclear.

I don't use a net breeder anymore, stresses my fish out to bad....I bought a 5 gal tank for that purpose... People will say that a guppy will stop eating and lay around hiding when she is ready to drop fry....I have had guppies for yrs...I have never had one to do this...what I look for is her belly will get very large at the top where her belly starts, but with in 24 hours it all moves to the back of were her poop hole is...that is the only way I can ever tell.

thankyou for your advice, ill move her tonight, and see how it goes!

thanks again
