Does Anubias need a substrate to root/live, or can it be attached to rock pieces (like Java Fern)?...

Can Anubias live 'out of' water (but in a humid, lit environment?)...

I'm changing a tank around and for visual interest, was thinking of lowering the water level so the tops of any rock/slate pieces show 'above' the waterline... and attaching some Anubias to the exposed rocks...

Most Anubias sp. does best attached to decor. It also grows emerged (out of water). Check this out - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=121897&hl=

Your plan sounds interesting.

Will Java Fern and Java Moss survive/grow 'emerged' too?...

I ask as I'm setting up a Tanganyikan Shell Dweller Cichlid tank... 'Shellies' live almost exclusively at the bottom (where the shells they live/breed in are) so in my 20UKG which is quite high too, there will be a lot of 'empty' upper water layers...

My thinking is... lowering the tank water level, thereby exposing the top 'third' of any rock/slate pieces would visually 'fill' these empty layers... and with a few small Anubias, J. Fern and J. Moss growing on these exposed rocks (as well as in the water itself), I'm hoping to end up with a complete 'above and below the water line' environment....
