I went to a wallmart today in a local city to look for a big fish net and oh my god i've never seen fish so poorly cared for in my life.
First of all they had what appeared to be brown common pleco's in a tank marked algae eater. It said they grow to 6"!!! in that tank there were atleast three dead pleco's laying on the bottom, as well as several other dead fish. The live pleco's were sucking on the corpses. It was quite disturbing. The worst thing though was the pictus catfish they had. I looked in the tank and saw THE WORST case of ich i've ever seen. The pictus was more white spot than scale. Even his wiskers had ich all over them. I wanted to run home and get my melafix and dump a little bit in all of the tanks. Is there anything I can do to help these badly mistreated fish? The Wallmart in my town does a much better job caring for there fish. (I rarely see more than 1 dead fish in a tank there.) But this place had atleast one dead fish in each tank, usually 3-4. Some of the dead fish had clearly been there a while because there heads were gone. I almost threw up. I wanted to buy all of them and take care of them but I simply cannot bear the burden. I am going to college right now so I can't get a job there but I would really really like to. Is there some agency I can call like the spca or something because this was simply inhuman. The worst part is that so many people were looking at the fish like they were planning on buying them.

That's sad :-(

A Lot of walmarts treat their fish like some toss away toy.

Aren't there animal cruelty laws? Or do they just apply to furry things?

Furry things, aka mammals ;)

I don't know, it is illegal to get a fish drunk I think, or that's what I've heard

So much for taking a guppy to a bar on Saturday night to have a beer ;)

I just can't imagine working in the pet department and not noticing the horrible ich on those fish. Why in the world did they still have them for sale? I should have asked to buy one and see what they said. I bet they wouldn't have even told me they were sick. Man. If I call the spca will they do anything about it?

It probably wouldn't help :-(

Talk to the dept. manager and if you don't see improvement then talk to the store manager and let him/her know you've talked to the dept. manager. Let them both know how disturbing this is to you. Be human to them and they will be human too. They have a tuff job in the pet dept BUT there's no excuse for shear lack of respect for the little lives swimming around. Someone CAN do something about it. :)

Just remember to be NICE always!

thank you that'll probably be a lot more effective than calling someone else and expecting them to do something about it.
