Briarmoor
Fish Crazy
Having another out of state visitor, I was asked to take my friend to the Tennessee Aquarium here in Chattanooga. Last visit, there were convicts in the cichlid exhibit with fry and it was very interesting to watch.
I don't know the gallons this exhibit holds, but it is a huge glass front tank so thousands of gallons for sure. There are many varieties of cichlids in here, convicts, firemouth, I am not a keeper of cichlids, so I don't recognize many but the more common ones.
This trip after careful observation, I noted 4 sets of fry, 3 being from 3 different species of cichlid. One batch belonged to a blue and black striped cichlid, one to a pair of bigger orangy red cichlids. No convict fry this time. Most of the babies were on the bottom near the substrate and rocks and the parents stayed over the top of them or close enough to intervene if another fish got too close. Some posturing went on, but the tank was amazingly calm considering territories were established for 4 separate groups of fry which probably hampered the fish without fry from moving about as they would have wished. Made for an entertaining watch though.
I should just get a membership as I have been twice this year to take other people. If anyone ever passes through Chattanooga, this aquarium is well worth seeing and reasonably priced. They have new river otters that actually do more than sleep. When I asked, they said the older ones were not as active. Makes sense.
