Me again.

Ok, so I have 2 tanks, one is 31 gallons, the other 37 gallons. The 37g has been up and running for a while and all early teething problems seem to be sorted. I have 2 filters in it, a fluval 2 and a fluval 3+, the fluval 2 is about 5 months old and the fluval 3+ doesn't look very old.

The 31g tank I've only had about 4 weeks and it came with everything, including fish, making a fishless cycle impossible. I brought about half the water with it as well as the filter, whcih is a fluval 3, but it's a brown colour and looks very old. The tank is looking a bit sick, it's overstocked, high in nitrates despite water changes and sparse feeding. Could the filter be part of the problem?

So I'm thinking about putting one of the newer filters in it, could my 37 gallon tank cope with only the fluval 2? The fluval 3+ is missing the bit that produces bubbles so I don't want to take the bubbles out.

Thanks x

Hmmm. Just googled fluval and it seems the fluval 3 even in good condition is not enough for the 31 gallon tank. I would say that is a big problem. So tomorrow shall I buy a fluval 4 and run it alongside the old fluval 3 in the sick tank?

The Fluval 4+ internal will be fine; I had one running in my 4ft for nearly three years without any problem - lovely big sponges. You may need the spray bar for it, though. Even in a 4ft it was quite powerful.
