I have several DIY C02 setups running in different tanks.
As usual when one is dying off I replace it with a new one a few days before it runs completely out.

I've been experimenting with one of them.
What I do is, add more sugar and a wee bit more yeast when it starts to run out.
It works, it actually starts to produce quite a bit of C02 instantly.
Has anyone tried this?
If so, what happened?
Is it worth while?
I noticed mine only lasts for a few days after I add more to the mixture.
Has anyone come up with a more specific recipe that lasts longer?

Obviously you can only do this for so long until the water becomes so saturated with sugar it wont disslove. but I thought I'd try and see what happens and if anyone else has tried it.

I used to use a teaspoon to measure my yeast and it was never very accurate, so if I got it a bit wrong and I wasn't getting enough bubbles I would open up after a couple of days and put more yeast in. Havent tried adding more sugar tho.

If you do add more sugar, do it s-l-o-w-l-y.
LOL
I just added some to a 1 litre mix and it overflowed the bottle, so I just started a new one.
So far I've been adding about 1/8 cup of sugar and 1/8 teaspoon of yeast and the mix lasts a few days longer.

Again, I'm playing around with this mix in a tank that houses no fish so I'm not worried about fluctuations of C02 and Ph etc etc.

Just curious... but has anyone checked the alcohol level of the sugar water after its all fermented out?

Might make a decent martini :hey:

It sure smells.
Like an open beer left in the sun for a few days.
I let my son smell it just earlier tonight and he yelled that it smelt like "gross disgusting beer"!
LOL

that would be an interesting idea! measuring the alcohol content :p hehehehehe

with me i use my c02 for around 2 weeks max ! and ideally replace it every week...... bubble rate drops down considerable after the first week....

Mines been pumpin bubbles non stop for almost 3 weeks now.

1 litre bottle
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon yeast
1 teaspoon baking soda (just playing round with this ingrediant)

I added after the second week:
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 teaspoon yeast
1/4 teaspoon baking soda

All of the above are approx.

note: I use an air stone to diffuse my C02, some bubbles go up into the submersible filter, the others are caught in a trap above to diffuse further.
