I have 2 lights on my aquarium. One a brighter fluro light and the other a blueish colour fluro light.

What is the difference and how long should I leave them on.

I have tended to leave them off as much as possible ... as we are in the middle of summer and it causes the water to warm up too much AND

another time when I had ich in my tank I read somewhere on this forum to keep lights out as it helps ich to multiply.

I do have possible problems in the tank (a few died with white stringy poops hanging a few days before death) all others looking good (touch wood) water just changed again and will try again in a few days time to take more out.

If you have live plants, then you need to have the light on for atleast 10hrs. If not, as long as the tank gets natural light the fish should be OK. Fish need light just like us to help regulate their days & nights.

You can switch on the fluros whenever you wish to enjoy the tank.

the blue light helps to bring out the color in fish. it has no other prupose really. Of course, it will brighten up the tank but if you have plants that require light, they don't help them very much.

If you don't have plants, then leave them on as much or as little as you wish, as long as the fish can get some kind of ambient light they will be fine.

thanks.

I turn the room light on most of the day for them to have extra day light and minimise the heat from the aquarium lighting.

I will leave the aquarium lights on for about 1 hour at each feed and then turn off as I usually do. I don't have plants apart from the cheap stuff i buy and they eat up in a week !!
