Im wondering whether my sunset platy that gave birth was already mated with before I got her. I bought her with a sunset male, but the male died like 2 days later... dumb... anyhow, I have had her for 3 months know and she just had fry. I thought it was every 3 weeks or so, or is there a possibly way for her to wait untill she feels conditions are right? Just curious to know since all her fry turned out yellow, like her, and the other male that could of been a possiblilty is orange and black and never goes around her, ever.

if i understand what ur asking, yes, they hold sperm for 7 months I believe so if she was inseminated earlier then she could still be caring his sperm in her and if you are asking about giving birth to the fry in her taking a while, yes sometimes it seems to take forever and the best thing to do that i've heard and found works is feeding bloodworms or live food and water conditions...even heard corys will spawn when there isa change in barometric pressure after a storm...anyway good luck and be patient :)

In answer to your last question, yes, they can hold on to the fry for a bit if they don't like the conditions. In some cases (though this is rare) when they are stressed they can reabsorb the fry. It's more common for them to abort them though. 3 months is a long time to wait for fry, are you sure she didn't have some already and they just got eaten? She will still have her gravid spot and remain some what fat, even if she had them.

She was absolutley tiny when I got her, really small. She wasnt fat the slightest bit, she was "malelike" in appearance besides the gonopodium, now she is fat, and bigger than the males. I dont think she was very old when I got her, it was the smalled platy I have ever purchased. She could of had babies before I got her, but not since I have had her. One of lifes mysteries I guess.

Well, they can essentially get pregnant at a very young age, however they usually don't have fry until about 3-4 months of age. Perhaps that is what happened with your's, since it seems you got her young. :)

Thats what I am guessing, since they dont seperate males from females at our lfs. She was in an aquarium with other sunset platies and some rainbow platies. I bought her with a male, but he didnt make it 2 days, and the male rainbow platy I bought jumped out of the tank the same day, so now I just have the two females from that purchase, the sunset (mother) and rainbow platy who NOONE likes, not even the females like her... they chase her aggressively, its kind of sad, she has no friends!

Them that's what I'd bet happened.

They aren't being too agrressive with her, are they? You don't want her getting injured or very stressed out.

No, they dont even go near her ever, and she is actually the aggressor, she chases other fish away from her. None of the males or female platies go close to her, and thats why I was thinking she was inseminated before I got her. Shes a loner.

Or were you talking about the rainbow platy? If you were, they just chase her away from them, nothing too mean.
