How do you get rid of thread algae once it is on your plants? Is there any way to treat them IN THE TANK?

remove as much as possible from the leaves (or remove the leaves). You can overdose excel or easy carbo by 3x daily, but a more effective way is to squirt the daily dose directly onto the affected leaves useing a pippette or a syringe.

Hair algae is a sign of low/ fluctuating CO2, low nutrients, or an ammonia spike.

Yeah, well, my nitrates are still high, but I had temporarily stopped dosing Excel because I was treating Ick and a potential Bacterial Infection (organic, reef and plant safe products). Today, I bought a fert product, similar to the one you use in the UK, that doesn't have phosphates or nitrate. I double dosed Excel tonight, and I am even contemplating the use of Advanced Algae Destroyer at this point (arrrg). Will do 20 to 25 percent water changes every other day for the next week also. Let's see if it works. I am thinking of just doing the Fert with Excel from now on, with nothing else to be added regularly (unless I see signs of iron deficiency). So, Excel every other day, and the fert once a week would be my schedule, with 25 percent water changes 1.5 times per week (6 times per month). That is about the extent of what I can do at this point. I have no problems bleaching my anubias, following it up by soaking them in excel, like I did last time. This also worked for my onions and banana plants, but I didn't dare do it with anything else. I have 86ed all of my java ferns, as they always looked terrible for some reason. I have lost many fish, so I am no longer highly stocked. That takes care of that. Is this stuff really supposed to be this difficult? LOL...

Why aren`t you dosing N and P, or certainly P if your nitrates are high?

Dave.
^^^^^^^

You'll have to excuse me, as I am a beginner with plants. I don't understand why I'd dose Nitrates and Phosphates when they both seem to already be so high in my tank. Why would I want to make them higher, especially when I am combatting an algae problem and have a well-stocked tank??? My algae problem erupted when I stopped using Excel. At least, that is the way I perceive it. I am open to any corrective feedback anyone could supply. I am going to remove most of my anubias, bleach them slightly, then soak them in excel after having rinsed them thoroughly. I'll prune them as I go. A conservative dose of Advanced Algae destroyer will hopefully take care of the hair algae, along with renewing the Excel dosing schedule. 25 percent water changes every other day, and I have been adding plants and mosses to help compete against the algae. By the way, this whole process is getting too expensive for my pocket...so, I don't know what other measures I can really take at this time.
