I've had a problem with an unusually high ph (8.2 but comes out of tap at 7) and i thought it might be down to the slate i had which i've since removed.

My boyfriend then pointed out that on the bottom of my natural ferns there is lead wrapped around the base and that lead is poisionous to humans (which i knew but hadn't really thought about) :S

Is it dangerous to fish and is it whats responsible for my silly ph?

I don't think a small amount of lead ie;the amount used on plants as weights, is a problem. It may be in large quantities, not sure. You could try putting some bogwood in your tank as the tannin in it lowers the ph. Soak it first though as too much tannin will discolour the water.

Try running some tap water and leaving it overnight and then testing the pH. The water in my tank is around 8, so I really wouldn't worry about it, fish adapt and it's more dangerous trying to adjust the pH than letting them get used to it. Also, the effects of bogwood are gradual, it'll probably take a couple of months untill you really see the change.

What fish do you have in there out of interest? (ignore that, just seen you sig) The guppies / neons are the ones that this would affect most, but if they're looking healthy, why worry!

Cool, it's just my bloke accused me of being stupid about the lead thing, now i can tell him i am knowledgable and am always right :D
