Well, I lost my new Panda Cory to popeye <sigh> I had him three days and noticed *severe* popeye. I looked at my fish before class, and they were fine. Came home about four hours later, and the Panda had really bad popeye. I put him in the hospital tank and added some Maracyn, but he was dead by the next morning :( Fortunately, all my other fish look just fine

Anyone ever cured a fish of popeye or do they pretty much always die?

How frustrating...

Sorry to hear about your lose. I had two Panda Cories and they both died :/ The other cories I have seem to do much better than the Panda's did. I hear they can be hard to keep.

i dont think there is a cure for pop eye, but they dont always necercerily die because of it

Thanks. Sorry to hear about your Pandas. They are a little "fussier" than the other Corys, a little harder to keep, at least compared to my Pepper Corys. Not sure why that is, but I've also read/heard that they are a little tougher to keep than other Corys. They sure are cute, though!

Yep. Cories are one of my favorite fish. No tank is right without a few :D

I've only had 3 cases of it.

I lost a female sword, and a trio of hatchets. :(

My last case was a month ago with my apisto Borelli. He got it from swimming in harsh ich meds for 2 weeks.

I finnished treating for ich, added carbon to the filter, and did a 75% water change.
It was gone in less than 36 hours. He's doing great today.

Pop eye is usually caused by poor water quallity (high nitrates) and in most cases should be easy to cure, simply doing a large water change and leaving the lights out for 24 hours should rectify the problem. In the rare case's of it being caused by a bacterial infection then treatment with a anti bacterial medication combined with melafix should sort the problem within a few days. I have had a few fish suffer from popeye and have yet to lose one to it

When it's caused by poor water quality, wouldn't it be likely that more than one fish would be affected? Each of the two times I've had a fish with popeye, only one fish has been affected, and everyone else has been fine. With the most recent case, it came up quickly, and the fish was dead within 12 hours, despite me immediately quarantining him and treating the tank with Maracyn. I do water changes at least once a week, oftentimes more (especially with the hot weather we've been having lately).

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

I never knew about keeping the lights off for 24 hours.

How does that help? :dunno:
