I am picking up my Rekord 70 tank next Saturday and I have been told by the shop that I need to cycle the water for 1 week. Is that correct?

What fish would you advise I put in at first? I like "Nemo's", coolie loach, catfish (the ones that stick theirselves to the tank by their mouth!), angel fish, dwarf gouramie and many others. Are these good beginner fish?

:dunno:

:hi: to the forum.

Your lfs seems typical in giving wrong advice, some are actually good, no really! Cycling is not a matter of adding water and waiting. Please read the pinned posts on cycling in the begginers section, very informative and helpful.

Good luck with your tank, you will enjoy it far more if you start properly.

Nemo's (common clowns/percula clowns) are marine fish, so no, angels are a no no as your tank will not house adult angels, some catfish such as corydoras are doable and you could house 1 dwarf gourami or 2 honey gourami and some other fish.

Hi All

Thank you for your welcome. :D

I thought Dwarf Gourami were tiny little fish so I could get quite a few. Are there any other fishes that you'd recommend?

:fish:

Its more a terratory issue as dwarfs are terratorial and you won't have enough space for more than one to set up its terratory, they are fine with other fish though. Honey gourami are also less terratorial and still look good.

Cool. Thanks Jon.

Now another question if I may?

I have heard that the lfs where I have ordered my tank from, does not have a quarantine tank and that it could be dodgy for buying fish from them. Should I look for a shop with a quarantine tank or doesn't it make a difference? If it does, can anyone recommend a good shop in the London/South East area?

Buttons :fish:

Not in your area, so can't reccomend a shop.

Quarantining has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is obvious, the disadvantage is stress. They are shipped to your lfs and quarantined, moved to a show tank, moved to your tank, lots of stress. My lfs does not put them in seperate tanks, they just wont sell them for a while.

Have a look in the fish store directory for shops in your area. One other little point, you should ask questions in the main forums, newbie is for introductions only :)
