I've moved this into the plants section thanks for the reply!

2: As I said I like the look of the plants. What’s the best plants to start with. I like the tall ones and the mossy types that cling to the bottom.

3: I’m planning to use sand, what sand is best. I’ve noticed a lot of pros and cons regarding using sand. I’m looking for a nice light colour.

4: A lot of people have mentioned bottom-feeding fish, which help clean the sand. What’s the best type for my size of tank?

5: Finally. It’s the usuall question! I’m looking to build a community tank so I’d like a idea of fish stocking and any suggestions of fish.
First off, hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

I give this a try but you will get a better response if you post this in the Planted section.

1) You can either add them before or after you finish cycling. It is generally easier to add them when you first set up your tank but not manditory. A planted tank at least gives you something to look at while the tank is cycling. As for CO2, you will probably have to add CO2 to keep the plants in good supply. Usually fish won't produce as much CO2 as a fully planted tank needs.

2) It's usually easy to start with a lot of fast growing, easy maintanence stem plants like Amazon Sword, Rosette, and Anacharis. Once you get a good stand, you can weed out some and move to some other plants.

3) There are many types of sand and prices range from about $2.50 for 50 lb (play sand) on up. As a general rule, the cheaper the sand, the harder it is to wash clean and get all the dirt out.

4) Bottom feeders like corys, kuhli loaches and even ghost shrimp are all scavengers. They hunt left over food, especially after the lights go out. They don't replace regular gravel vacuuming though as you still need to remove the fish waste.

5) It's hard to say what you can put together. Most community fish are schooling fish so you need groups of at least 3 and preferable 6.
