Not only do the fry survive, they are also blessed with hybrid vigor, making them stronger and larger than either parent. This is called an F1 hybrid.
Not all of the fry are sterile either and can go on to breed with other hybrids or other pure poecilia species.

Mollies are also capable of reproducing by pseudogamy which is a form of stimulated parthenogenis.
This means that when mated by a male of any species with the right 'equipment' the female's eggs are stimulated into growing
without the male's sperm fusing with the eggs.
This results in offspring that are in fact clones of the mother and carry none of the male's genes at all.
Parthenogenis is also found in several other species of fish, many insects, frogs, reptiles....and the Dinosaurs from Jurrasic park!
