Soon as they don't fit in their mouths?? :hey:

It depend mate, I have had fry that are .05" eat the smaller ones when they got hungary... but also had ones which were left alone from newborn (not even free swimming) so really it's a case of not sure... how about a tank divider? thats what i use and then when they are ready they go in the small fry tank..

oh regarding your WC fish not spawning - just give them time, no one likes extra pressure when it's there first time and they have to do it with you with your face pressed up against the glass too eager to help yourself :hey: :hey:

Thought about a tank divider but my 30g tank is a bow front and i did not want to start sticking things to it, Hang on i think i just found an excuse for another tank !

Thanks, time for tank shopping and if the girlfriend asks im blaming you lot

I did this - got a 18" tank, got a divider siliconed in place in middle a small heater and an air pump filter.... no lights but don't need them, whole set up cost less than £30 :good:

how old are the ones on the left hand side, they look pretty big, very nice all the same, i luv that cannon to lol :)

lol - the cannon is there to provide shelter NOT jokes

the ones on the left are about 7 months i'm guessing

The ones on the right are about 2 months....

... they would be ****** if they had a bigger tank that allowed them to eat more and poop more

Hi druchii, first i am not one of these that says you should do this do that, you do what works best for you, all i am doing is offering some advice and that would be, the tank you have set up is ideal, but in the left hand side with the older fish you have no water movement the water will stale, even if you drop an airstine in it is fine as your filter is doing the rest, the water cannot circulate as freely as if the divider wasnt theret, as i say just some friendly advice.

cheers stewy

Hey Stewy :D

I know what you mean. :D
I try any combat this problem (as i can never remember to buy T bars for my airline) is that i change water every day, 50% from my main tank with this to hopefully control that aspect a little better.

This is one whilst i vac out the poo that builds up over the day as the little blighters are really messy :hyper:

I was jsut getting really worried that you was gonna have a go at my cannon.....

Hey the cannon is awesome, i am sure there are lots of cannons on the bottom of lake malawi
but as long you keep the water changes up etc it should be fine and when you drop in your lfs just pick up a t bar and air stone they will grow like crazy.
good luck with the babies

caught off gaurd again woke this morning and she has spat also in my main tank my afra and long pelvic are getting fruity, It looks like cold water changes does work its something i was told at the lfs, they have been trying it for a while and increased breeding.

Still need another tank thats 3 full dont even have a hospital tank now.

Good news is my lfs will credit me £3.00 each for them

lucky old you :D

I've heard the same thing, but it's not really down to the cold water that promotes spawning (although of wild fish this is supoosedly down to the 'rainy season')

The major factor that seems to make sense and that is universally accepted (that probably means i'm wrong btw  ) to promote spawning is the sudden enclusion of much better water quality... thats not saying that yours is not good or even acceptable :D it's just that the water going into the tank should contain less nasties than the water init, particulalry if you also gravel vac at the same time B)

Every week I change 25% and suddenly afterwards, all the fish are more colourful, trying to claim terratories and then ultimately getting fruity...

...the morning after the night before and.... well there are nearly all egg faces about :hyper:

I have been into my malawis for a while now, and it is in fact cold water changes that promote spawning, as in the lake there are mountains all around the lake which have snowy peaks, when the snow melts it all runs down into the lake the fish know then that it is breeding season as the temp of the lake drops as this much water from the mountains reduces the temp of the lake a fair few degrees, you can even promote spwning in your malawi aquarium by not just cold water changes but simply switching your heater off for 24hrs, the drop in temp will promote the spawning with no harm to fish with the few degree drop in temp, hope this helps.
