Hi everyone i'm new here and i've had a 12 gallon nano for about 2 years now. I have a mated pair of ocellaris clowns that have been around for 7 years now. I have kind of avoided my tank for awhile, but now my friend has motivated me to get back into it. :good: So today me and my buddy went to my LFS and bought a firefish, went home and acclimated him properly, put him in and he went and hid under one of my LR. Its been bout 7 hours and he is still hiding in the same spot. I fed my tank earlier and I saw him eat some food that got near his hiding spot. So my question is:
1) Will he ever be comfortable enough to come out with my pair of clowns around?
2) If so, how long would it take? Because I saw a fish tank set up today at my LFS with 3 of them roming around with other fish.

Thanks for the help fellas :good:

yeh give it more time fish can be shy for days or even weeks! especially firefish! the 3 were probably well establised in that tank + there shoaling fish so are more confident with other firefish!

Thanks for the reply. Do you think if i were to put the firefish back into a bag and let him float near the clownfish for about an hour or so he would get used to being around them and therefore not be afraid and hide in the same spot?

nah that will prob stress it out a bit more! just leave it will become more confident with time, maybe a day or a week as i said buy your start to see it more ... its same hiding spot will be due to insticnt there sometimes called dartfish cus they dart bak into there hiding hole wen scared i believe so its probably just getting used to its new surroundings :)

it depends on ur pair of there aggresive it may never come out, since ur pair has been there for 7 years it will probably take them a little while to get used to someone in there territory

It is worth noting that the firefish (or dartfish) that we buy come from the rubble zone and will reside in a small outcrop of rock for protection. After a while you should notice the fish come out and sit just above its chosen home and at the first sign of trouble (such as someone walking past) it will dive for cover.

The timidness is a natural reaction for the fish no matter what the inhabitants are.

I find this interesting, because that is exactly what I read everywhere about these fish. BUT. . of course my firefish is completely different. He basically has taken the entire left side of my 75 for his own. The only time he goes into the rock is when he's sleeping.

Thanks for the help guys. I think im going to just be patient and continue to directly feed him around his little hiding spot. Do you guys think so?

Welcome aboard patna! :good: Yeah I think you should just wait it out, i'm sure in time it will come out, especially since you told me that it comes out now when you feed it. Good job in restarting your tank! Remember every week a new coral! Hit me up for help whenever ya need it baddy!!
