Hi there!

Hopefully you guys will be able to help me.

I don't have any pics (sorry) but my betta has what I assume is fin rot. He was moved from a community tank to his own 50l with a small shoal of endlers, and they both seem to leave each other alone.

I moved him because he had some scales missing and his fins were looking bitten, obviously been in a fight with someone. After moving, his fins started to grow back and fill in and I was pleased with his progress. Today, though, I noticed that the edges of his fins look very raggedy and split, and sort of crinkled. I assume this is fin rot?

I was planning to buy some myxazin or some other similar treatment later, but I was wondering if it was best to separate him or not?

I have a spare tank but no other filter or heater so unless it was absolutely necessary I'd rather not. Would myxazin affect the filter in the current tank? It's been a bit iffy recently but I've been changing the water whenever any of the ammonia/nitrites etc appear and it seems to be settling down. Presumably these water conditions have started/escalated his fin rot? I don't want to add treatments if it's going to kill of the filter as I've been working hard to get it back to normal.

Firstly, don't move him to the spare tank unless you have adequete filtration and a heater, because his problems will just get worse.

You say that water changes haven't been so regular lately, but I cannot stress enough the importance of regular water changes. I know it's sometimes hard to fit it into a busy schedule but it's essential to keeping fish healthy.

Try to get hold of some form of medication for fin rot. I personally use melafix and find it to be quite effective. You should also perform a large water change as soon as possible. Try to do these every day or every other day until the problem improves. Do this alongside medicating your betta and it will help a great deal. Fin rot occurs when bacteria gets into an open wound which may be caused by aggressive behaviour/scratches from decor. The bacteria resides in the water so it is important to ensure you keep up the water changes.

Keep us posted on how he gets on. I hope he's okay :)

My male suffered with fin rot not long ago, there is a topic on this page.
I give him daily water changes for a week then gave him a 5 day course of myxazin. The water changes may help if it isn't too bad, unfortunately for me i needed to medicate. he is fine now and is regrowing

I tried melafix at first but that done nothing.

Good luck with him

Hiya!

Sorry, I musn't have been very clear, I'm changing his water VERY regularly as the filter is being a bit wonky - when I moved him to his new tank I had to use some media from the older filter and it doesn't seem to have settled in quite yet.

I'm checking the ammonia and nitrite levels every day with an API liquid test kit and changing the water whenever they show anything - so at least every two days, sometimes every day if it needs it.

I will definitely keep up the changes as much as he needs, but I was worried that any anti-bacteria medication might also kill off what I'm trying to grow in the filter!

Just another quick question - I know you guys recommend myxazin but I've heard it's hard to get hold of unless you buy it online.

I can definitely order some from Ebay or wherever but I'm anxious to get started on treating this ASAP. Does anyone have any experience with the Interpret 'anti fungus and finrot' treatment?

It's just that I know I can pick some of this up tonight and get started!

Ahh right, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Keep up your water changes for sure. As for the anti-bacterial medication killing off bacteria in your filter, I'm not actually sure as to the answer to that one.

It'll be good to see what people think about this because i've been wondering if its any good too!

My opinion Id go for the Myxazin. Interpet may work, actually im sure it will, but i have heard great reports about myxazin and also tried and tested it. My way of thinking, with myxazin you treat everyday for 5 days, with interpet (in 99% sure) you treat once every 4 days, so I think if your treating everyday your doing some good and at least helping  like i said, my silly way of thinking :D

It is a pain to get hold of, I also had to order mine from eBay. (although realised my garden centre actually stocks it up the road from me  )

If you go myxazin and have to wait for it, id do daily water changes until it comes. My boy was getting about 45-50% daily.

:good:

Thanks for the input! I have a few LFS around me who seem to stock a lot of different brands of treatments so I'll have a look around first and see what I can find. It's jsut I only noticed today and his fins are already quite 'thread like' and straggly looking so if I can start ASAP then great :)

Is there anything he could be flaring up at by the way? Because my betta gets a bit like that when hes spent a few days flaring up at the tetras. It could even be something outside the tank. Just a thought.

Hmm, I suppose that could have contributed. He still flares occasionally through the glass at his arch enemy the gourami (the tanks are next to each other) but except for when they were bitten, his fins are looking worse than when he was actually LIVING with the gourami, and they're flare at each other all the time.

He's had tears and rips and things, but this has a different look to it, sort of tissue paper-y and a bit withered looking all of a sudden.

hmm, it doesn't sound like that then. As you say, usually flaring doesn't do quite that much damage. I have a betta in with a gourami too and he occasionally gets the tiniest rips from flaring at him. I hope you get him better! :)

Thats the way Thai went but he took a turn for the worst

The beginning - looking a little tatty on his tail

I blame myself for it getting so bad in the first place, I was treating with melafix and seeing no improvement but kept treating anyway.

Im sure your boy wont get this bad as you seem to have caught it quickly enough :)

Wow - that's some amazing regrowth! My boy is a veiltail and his fins are all the same dark red so it's kind of hard to tell what they look like unless he flares out. But I noticed a lot of seperate 'threads' and raggeddy bits that look just like Thai's today :( Hopefully it isn't too late, he's recovered from a couple of serious-looking missing bits (bites?) before, so fingers crossed if I get him some medication he'll improve as much as your boy has!
