With due deference to Tim, he's not the only authority on this subject, he's just the best known one. Science moves on. If that were not the case we'd still believe that nitrobacter was the main nitratation bacteria in our aquariums!
Of course it does. But lets consider a few things. First, Dr. Hovanec has every motivation to discover any mathod that would extend the life of the bacteria in the bottle since he sells it. Seem to me its in his best interest to have it last 2.5 years vs one year max. Second, I doubt he came up with the one year estinate out of the air, I would bet a lot of research went into that conclusion.
Third, I can read a ton of stuff both on Dr. Tim's site and from other researchers regarding nitrifyng bacteria. I have probably perused over 100 abstracts and articles on this topic and have not come up with anything to indicate the discovery of a way to keep the bacteria alive longer. Combine this with the fact that there is nothing be on the API site in terms of details or research provided to back up the claim that their bacteria will last 2.5 years in a bottle. Heck, they don't even identify what bacteria is in their bottle.
That old science moves on saw means nothing really. Archimedes explained the principle of the lever about 2200 years ago. IT is as valid today as it was then.
But what truly puzzles me is how easily folks are willing to call into question Dr. Hovanec's work and his product claims despite his credentials, the amount of research information and the provided explanations about how and why his product works. But then when unsubstantiated claims are made by others, they are readily accepted.
Look at what API said about their new product in their press release:
QUICK START is a breakthrough in the aquatics industry; allowing for the safe and immediate introduction of fish to the aquarium by immediately starting the biological filter.
Umm breakthough??? The type of product has been around for years now starting with Bio-Spira. Did API sleep though this? When Dr. Hovanec made his "breakthrough" discovery it earned him a PhD and it was published in a scientific journal. So who is the scientist or scientists who made a breakthrough for API, where can one read a journal with their results?
Go to Dr Hovanec's site and you can spend a lot of time reading. Go to the API site and you can't find any factual information about their new product. I even did a search for "patented nitrifying bacteria + aquarium". I found a number of patents Dr. Hovanec has but absolutely nothing relating to API. The most interesting thing I read was from one of Dr. Hovanec's patents which he applied for in 2003 and was granted in 2009:
Described herein are novel ammonia-oxidizing bacteria as well as isolated nucleotide sequences representative of 16S rDNA of these ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. Particular bacteria of the present invention are tolerant of freshwater environments, saltwater environments or both. Furthermore, in various embodiments, various bacteria of the present invention are capable of surviving a freeze-drying process, and may remain viable thereafter. Methods for preventing or alleviating the accumulation of ammonia in aqueous environments, such as aquaria and wastewater are also provided, using the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria of the present invention.
