Angry Betta And The Hero Neon

Well over the last few days my betta has been acting strange. He has staring chasing the neons round the tank and flaring his gills out at them, quite a lot too. When he gets close he just stops most of the time, but one or two occasions he has gone for them, whats going on with him?

Anyways today i was doing a large water change (im still trying to get rid of nitrites) as the water got lower the betta was chasing a single neon (i have 8)the neon got stuck on a plant and ended up face down, the betta then went sideways on the plant and went for the neon very aggresivly, it looked like he was doomed (dont worry, i wasnt just sat watching i was getting something to free the neon) before i could help another neon came to the rescue and managed to knock the doomed neon free and they both swam away to safety, how strange? i didnt know they would do this for each other?

However, this is the kind of reason why neons shouldn`t really be kept with Bettas

I always thought the neons would be after the fighter, not vice-versa.

I really dont know what to do then, the only reason we brought them with the betta is they were in the same tank at the lfs so i just assumed they would get on and live happy little lives

We only have the one tank so do i have any other options, i dont really wanna watch them fight

If your tank is big enough, adding more neons might help. The only other thing I can think of is to show the Betta a mirror for 5 min every day: maybe he thinks he's a neon atm.
