I recently got a 150gallon tank for my birthday. The person that gave me the tank has 2 huge angels and various other fish to give me for the tank but he is having some issues at his place and has to get rid of the fish now.

My tank is close to fully cycled but the problem is I do not have a heater for it (did research and built my own filter for it).

2 questions:
1. can I safely make a heater for it?
2. Can angel fish survive in cold water? I have just over a week until I can afford to get a filter but her has to give the fish away before then.

Any suggestions??

Thank You!

Scientific Name : Pterophyllum scalare
Common Names : Albino, Black, Gold, Silver, Marbeled Angelfish, Koi Angelfish, etc - seems there is a common name for each color variety.

Angelfish Care Level : Easy

Size : Up to 6 inches (15 cm)

pH : 6 - 7.5

Temperature : 74°F - 84°F (23°C - 29°C)

Water Hardness : 5° to 13° dH

Lifespan : 8 - 10 years

Origin / Habitat : Amazon River

Temperament / Behavior : Generally peaceful, but can be aggressive eaters and may become territorial while breeding.

Breeding Angelfish / Mating / Reproduction : Use pH of 7.0 and a higher temperature of 80°F. They will lay the eggs on a vertical or diagonal surface. Assuming you have a pair, they are not difficult to breed. Read the article on breeding Angelfish for more information.

You keep an angel at 74F you are going to have problems. These fish like it as warm as discus, and can handle temps well into the 90's F. Keep them cold, their metabolism slows, meaning digestion, which will cause constipation.

I wish I could figure out a way to make heaters cheaper than you can buy them for. It's cheaper to buy them. Closest you can come is to heat the entire room, which usually means a free standing gas fired unit. This only makes sense if you have many tanks.
