I currently have a Juwel Vision 180. Currently stocking 3 Mollies, 2 Zebra Loaches, 1 Honey Gourami and 1 Spotted Climbing Perch. Thinking about adding Angels but have never kept them before. Two LFS have angels that appeal to me. One has a large batch of blue angels and another has one black angel that I love. Could I get 2 blue angels from one shop and the black one from another? If I were to keep 3 which sex would you suggest?

I'm no expert on Angels just be careful because some get really very big, check with your LFS that your tank is suitable.

also the only way of sexing them properly is to have proven sexes, which is not common in LFS

I'm sure the general rule is 10g per angel and my tank is 47g so 3 should be ok size wise but I don't know if they will be ok with my other fish? The fish I've seen are very juveniles so very small at the moment. Looking around to get a custom tank built at the moment and that will be 46" x 24" x 14" so roughly 66g and the angels will be moved to that.

To reduce the potential aggression, you should go with 1 or 4+. If there's an odd number, it's possible the odd one out will be bullied. They can get to the size of your Spotted Climbing Perch (about 6"). How big is that fish right now? I'm not super familiar with the other fish you have in the tank (haven't kept any of them myself), but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents about the # of Angels. Also they are extremely hard to sex when they are juveniles. You may have more luck sexing them if you can find some adults, but they will likely be more expensive.

The tank is big enough, but the inch per gallon rule doesn't really apply to cichlids - its only a loose guide. The issue with cichlids are usually territories or aggression, and angels are known for bullying other angels to death.

I'd stick to one if I were you, 4 might be overdoing it abit in a tank of that size. Pick your favourite and look at getting an apisto pair, or possibly some GBR's/Bolivian Rams. You won't be disappointed.

I went for 4 in the end. 2 blue initially and then 2 blacks that I bought yesterday. Here's some pics of the 2 blues.

I felt with my filtration and the water maintenance I do, I can afford to have 4 in this tank until I get a bigger tank which will come later in the year.

angelfish can be a bit nippy towards other fish that swim around the top area of the tank, so your mollies and gourami might be in for a shock, but probably not until the angels are a bit bigger

i reckon that first one is going to be a stunner when he's all grown up :D
