Angels

We have two small-ish Angel fish and last night they were swimming around as if they were kissing. their mouths were joined and one would swim backwards and the other forwards for a small period and then wriggle a bit and come free. It is hard to explain, but they did it several times.

Can any one explain this behavior?

They were either disputing for territory, or trying to see if the other was strong enough to mate.

most likely to be breeding that is could you explain the activity as a "lock-jaw" position?
you may have some eggs in a day or two

i dont think its something to do with mating actually, more of aggression. you mentioned 'small-ish', how 'small-ish' do you mean?

they could be preparing for spawning. Are there colors brighter then usual?

Age is more of a factor than size. Some angels, such as blacks, grow slower. The average age for pairing behavior to begin is 9 months, but I've seen them act this way as young as 7 months.

Lip locking is more pairing behavior than territorial desputes.
