Ok, this pair have laid eggs about 10-12 times, and we have only had unfertalized eggs.
Is this not a male fertalizing them?
Why can't we get any fry out of these guys?

No thoughts?
This morning there are a few white eggs. I know that means unfertlilized. It's pretty discouraging.

my two spawned again last night but had ate the eggs by this morning
scot

Mine used to do that, now they last for a few days but they all seem to be unfertalized... they end up turning white and then get eaten.

Hi, From the Vid.Clip, I'd say they are definately a Male/Female pair. (and stunning too!)

>> But, I noticed you have other fish in aswell......it's best to have only the Parent's in Tank, then let them spawn on site, remove the parents after a day or 2. >> (Or take chance on them not eating young Fry/eggs.)
...The other fish could be eating the fertilised eggs, or causing the parents too much stress in protecting them, and subsequently eating them also.

>> A proportion of the eggs usually are un-fertilised - turning whte after a day or so. If you add some Methylene.Blue, and provide an airstone near to the spawned site - this will help to prevent the fungas spreading.

>>> Ideally a 2 or 3 foot tank should be used for the Breeding pair - and then to raise the Fry in. (or bigger, if possible)

Good luck for future attempts!
(Mine tend to spawn every 10-14 days once they have started!!)

when i was watching mine spawn last night one had what looked like a pointed end and the other was more tube like is this a good sign that their opposite sexes?
scot :good:

Thanks. I think they're quite beautiful.
Well I didn't intend for them to breed, but they are. I do have a community tank. They guard them pretty well and usually they all turn white before they're eaten, as apposed to being eaten before they have a chance. I don't have the means to give them their own tank sadly.
There is an air tube near the filter there, will that help?

..The Female will have a broader tube-like protrusion (Papillira) and the Males tube will be thinner and more pointed. Males tend to have a lump at forehead, with a change in the angle if you look from the side. They also usually, (not always) have more extended Finnage to the Dorsal/Anal Fins.

>>It sounds like you have a M/F, and if they start to spawn, it will be a regular occurrance.

....It could be worthwhile in setting up a spare tank, if u want to have the enjoyable experience of watching the Fry grow and perhaps sell some on. ?
>>You would probably have a lot of takers, of those great Platinums, and if they are a Pair - then they'll have hundreds in future.

.....I couldn't see all of your fish in the clip, but if you have other Angels/ Cichlids in, they will be chased and harrassed a lot from the Pair. >>Tetras etc, will get a few nips, and they will try to eat the eggs when Parents are off-guard.

>>Having a moderate-speed airflow near the eggs is good, especially if you remove them to own tank.

+ Live Baby Brineshrimp is great food for the Young ones.

There are some Tetras (neons, I know, but not had a problem with them) black tetras, siscortails, danios and cories. No other Chiclids

I had them in a 75 gal for a while and they never spawned in there. Weird. I do have a 20 gal... not set up and really no where to put it. I might consider it. You think that's the only good chance of getting some fry?

...20 Gal- is that about 75 Litres? Mmmmm? Ideally a larger space would be good, but if it's tall - then it may be O.k.

>> Or put the smaller Tetras etc... into the smaller tank, (they most certainly would have been eating/attempting to eat the eggs.)

yeah, I can understand that. There's really not much room for the 20, actually I think it's a 29 gallon, and it is tall.
I'm just curious why they end up white before they get eaten. They're not getting fertalized in the first place.

>> Yes, the white ones are the eggs that the Male has 'missed' when Fertilising + some can become Fungassed when there is not enough Oxygenated water around them.....The Parents would clean them/ Fan them until free-swimming , but if you remove the Parents then You just put a (small) airstone near to the site of the Eggs. > Have it on constantly and maybe add some 'Methylene Blue' also.
