I've got 2 angels that are about 9 months old (3 inches) and they appear to be kissing. They lock lips for at least 5 seconds and then start chasing each other round in circles without touch each other.

Any ideas what they are doing?

I got a video clip, I'll post it tommorrow if I can.

This is a minor version of territorial fighting with cichlids. My rainbow cichlid and geo do it occasionally (When the geo goes by the rainbows rock) I have never kept angels but I am guessing this is what the lip locking is all about :)

I keep Discus in another tank and they do it too and get a bit nasty sometimes. The angels seem different though, almost choriagraphed ( don't think I spelled that right ), they don't hurt each other or try and avoid each other. They're all friendly and chilled again straight after.

It could be a mating behavior, again, I have never kept angels. I vaguely recall my rainbow cichlids liplocking before they began to breed, so it could be that you have a pair. If you do actually end up having them breed, good luck :p

Wow we posted at the same time

Most fish that use this behaviour are fighting, kissing gourami are the best example. Never heard of that as a mating ritual. Are they male and female?

Is this the same for Platys? I have 2 red platy's, one a bit bigger than the other one, and they often seem to chase each other round all over the tank. don't know about the lip locking though...

Angels are impossible to sex visually, from what I've heard :) Platies are platies and one of the things they do best (and constantly) is breed. Cichlid behavior's generally don't apply to livebearers :)

Yer I guess, the only way to sex angels is to see one lay eggs :p still think they are fighting though, but I am from Barcelona.

Is that your Geo in your sig. Dwarf? It's well nice!

I hear they're little buggers though, does yours re-arrange it's tank all the time?
Yep that's my geo, Since i don't have anything in his tank besides heavy rocks and PVC, he doesn't bother the way it's et up, but he soes a pretty good job eating leftover food in the top layer of gravel. I'm waiting for him to get to full size, they get more colorful and beautiful with sge
