I really like the angelfish. Could I safely put 6 in a 29, maybe turn into a species tank?

If say 2 of them spawned would I have to worry about the other 4?

No you couldn't, 2 would barely fit and still will have a lot of squabbles between them for territory.

Yes you can. I have 6 in a 30g atm. I can give you pics if you want. I am just trying to pair them off. Yours will pair off, int aht case, you will need to move the pair into a different tank. unless you can find 6 females. Mine get along pretty well though. A couple skirmish aday, but nothing serious enough to hurt eachother.

I am sorry, but IMO both of you are wrong.

2 will have no problems fitting into a 29 gallon. You can easily go by one Angel per 10 gallons of water, this rule can be pushed. Although 6 Angels my be fine for a bit, by the time they hit mature size, it would definitely be pushing it, I am talking with or without a pair. I do agree with Kribensis12 about the pairing off. Either the pair of the fish other fish would have to be removed.

I have bred angels for many years, and yes I have kept pairs in a 29, but when they aren't breeding they will squabble over territory. 6 in a 29 can be done temporary if they are small, but as they get older, before they start pairing up you will see that the angels aren't growing to their full potential. I have a pair now that are kept in a 55 gal that both are tipping at a little more than 6 inches and aren't pairing up yet so believe they are both the same sex.

How am i wrong? Right now, if all 6 angels were the same sex, i dont belive i would be seeing any fighting over territory.

im pairing off my angels at the mo in a 30g and there is no squabbling even when a female without a partner laid eggs on a sword leaf

Your wrong, in thinking that 6 Angels in a 29 gallon is fine.

So, i am wrong in assuming that 6 females would be fine? I know a lady who has siz females in a 30. She is a teacher at our school.

Yes as there isn't enough room for them to reach their full size. And just because the teacher has 6 in a 30 doesn't make it right. You have to look at the health and well being of the fish at the full grown size, not as young fish that will grow to 5 to 6 inches full grown. 6 in a 29 to 30 gal tank will cause stunting, which in turn will shorten the life span of the angels.

Thanks.

When will they pair off?

How do you tell what their sex is?

^ You can never know. They could pair off in 5 hours or 5 months. You cant sex them, until they breed. I can barely tell which angel is the male and which is the female when they arent spawning!

I really couldn't tell you for sure, because I have never done it but not sure if I would try it. You really can't sex the fish unless they are breeding anyways.

You could do this safely if you have a good back up plan. This means a couple of 20 highs with cycled filters running for them on the 29. Plan on doing a lot of water changes, and observing behavior. You might get lucky & have 6 compatible fish, you might not be so lucky, and have some torn up fish, or one chased out of the tank.

You have to understand that there are a lot of variables involved in angel temperament, and no doubt if you try the usual community tank normally stocked maintenance on a 29 with 6 angels you will stunt them. 50% water changes twice weekly, 3 times as they approach adult size will give you fish with no stunting, provided they are reasonably compatible.

If you don't have experience with angels don't try keeping 6 long term in a 29. Your best bet is to start with 6 juvies, letting the shop know you will be bringing back some near adult angels for credit. Once you get a pair, bring your other fish back, or risk problems if you don't have some tank space available for the pair, or unpaired fish.

6 angels in a 29 is a good way to get a pair, if you want to try multiple pairs in a tank, or a tank with paired & unpaired fish you will need a bigger tank.
