Was looking after a black angelfish for my uncle since his 4' tank was in a terrible state and about to go IMO. Was a little over an inch when I got it a few months ago, so put it in a 15L temporarily until I had time to set up another 4' tank. That took longer than expected though, and the fish grew a lot so I just put it in my 190L corner tank, with my other (koi) angelfish.

They fought a lot for a day or two (lip locking and biting) and the smaller black one come out very battered, was about to just remove the fish but then they made up. Now they are cleaning the leaves of one of the big Echinodorus plants together and chasing other fish away, I'm assuming this is a definite sign of getting ready to spawn? (question one)

Last time I accidentally spawned angels I was away and missed the courting, so am unsure.

Does this mean they are defiantly a male and female for sure? (question two)
I have noticed their genital area seems to be protruding a little more than usual, can I use this to sex them without seeing the actual spawning? (question 3)

It's a shame, they are in a tank with lots of other big fish that will likely eat the eggs, or cause them to eat the eggs, but I may try to move some to a breeding trap with an airstone, then later to my shrimp tank.

tl;dr: here's some very quick pics, any thoughts?

1) They more than likely are getting ready to spawn.

2) Probably, but two females have been known to pair & spawn in the absence of a female.

3) Yes, the male will have a smaller, more pointed tube, similar ti the tip of a very sharp pencil. The female's tube will resemble the tip of a very dull pencil.

I tried playing with the pictures provided a little, lightening them up & such, but really couldn't see anything definite.

Going by the pics, the black appears to be female and the Koi male

Thanks a lot Tolak :).

They spawned today while I was away :D.

Even my big T.ellioti stays away from them. They are both fanning the eggs, but the Koi does more shoving. I guess that could just because he/she is bigger and has been in the tank longer. Going from the genital descriptions I'd say the black one is the make, but there's not a whole lot between them right now, and I'm ot excatly in the right state of mind to judge brilliantly (last day of high school today... :drinks: ).

Between a miraculous A in physics, banter with mates and the angelfish spawning - it's been a fairly good day :D.

Cheers too Allasse, koi is certainly doing more shoving :).

Seeing them looking after the eggs actually makes me fell gutted they will probably be eaten. All the other fish have been put in thier place by the angels, but my snyno just swims past ignoring the angels, at night if he wanted a tasty egg snack I doubt he would be stoppable :(.
