I would really like to try to breed my angelfish but only have 2 juveniles. If they are different sexes I will leave them and see what happens, but if they are the same sex I guess once they mature they won't get on so well and I will probably end up having to get more.

So my question is if I post some good clear pics of my angels on here would there be any chance of you guys being able to sex them??

Thanks

Angelfish are almost impossible to sex except when they are breeding. You can then sex them then by looking at their breeding tubes (the breeding tubes are only visable for a short period of time). I think (not 100% sure) the female's is more rounded and "tear drop" shaped and the male's is "cone shaped" If you want a pair the best thing to do would be to buy six young angelfish and let them pair off themselves when you have a suitable pair you can return the others back to the shop or sell them.

Ok maybe I'll do that. Will different angels breed together e.g. will a zebra angel breed with a koi angel?

The different colour varieties will breed together. But it isn't advised that you breed the different types of angel together. e.g breeding a black P. Scalare with a koi P. Scalare would be fine but avoid breeding P. Scalare with P. Altum or another type of angelfish.

I have a gold pearl scale and a zebra.. could these two breed?

while it may be hard to sex Angelfish.. here's a little tip:

Female angel fish have a more angled head/face.. like a direct slope downwards from head to mouth.
Male angel fish have a more pronounced forehead - it's more rounded than the female.

This might help you a little :)

OK when I get home tomorrow i'm going to post a pic and see what anyone can come up with MartinD maybe you can give it a go because i'm hopeless at subtle differences!

In a group of angels from the same spawn, if you exclude the few runts and rapid growers from every spawn, the males are generally slightly larger, the females slightly smaller. Females will get a little rounder & wider on the bottom as they mature, and males will show a bit more agressive tendencies. In a group of potential breeders that are 8-10 months old, and settled in their environment, I can guess them at about 80% accuarcy, plain guessing is 50%. This takes into account behaviour as well as appearance. The larger crown on males is only noticable in mature fish, 8 months of age is the minimum age I have seen this, and I've seen plenty of angels.

Anything smaller than quarter body size is just guessing, especially if they are younger than 6 months old.

^Listen to Tolak, he has seen thousands of angelfish, if any one can sex them, it's Tolak.
