i have a group of 8 F1 Leopoldi angelfish which are growing well and getting on great so far... they are about 3 inch bodied fish + fins.

i am all being well getting a group of between 2 and 5 wild caught Peru 'Altum' Scalare on friday and was thinking of adding these to the group of Leopoldi. the tank is 5ft so a decent size for a nice group of angels but i feel more than 8 will be pushing it especially when they get to adult/max size.

so my first thought was to get 2 Peru angels which are a similar size body but a taller fish and remove 2 Leopoldi still giving me 8 angels in total but using the bigger growing Peru fish as a kind of center piece addition. i know 2 angels is a bad idea unless paired which these arent but if added to a group of 6 others that also arent paired or showing any signs would it work? 3 is also a bad number for a group of any cichlids but if it will work by adding to the Leopoldi group then that is another option.

i just liked the idea of say 6 Leopoldi and 2 Peru. i have no plans of breeding so no cross breeding comments please, im not even sure if they would cross breed to be honest but any eggs wouldnt last long anyway with the other tank mates.

any ideas as im collecting them, however many it may be, on friday.....

i just have reservations about keeping the altums in the pair even though they will be with other angel fish. every thing i have read says its paramount for there long term survival to remain stress free which means lots of there own kind. it might work though. it would be interesting to see how the interact with the leopoldis. would you not consider a different centrepeice fish like severums or geo's or something?

do you have any pics of your leopaldi's? do you find they behave different to scalares?

i am not getting true altums. the ones im getting are wild peru 'altum' scalare angelfish. they are the closest looking angel to the true altum without being a true altum!

i have done the severum and big cichlid thing and set up this angel tank as a change so i will only be adding other angels.

i have a journal in the new world cichlid section on the forum where there are some pics of the Leopoldi angels. ive had them from very small juvis and so far they have the same characteristics as any other angel tbh but are still quite young so time will tell.

Ok mate. i think it would be well worth a try with the scalares then

Im off to find your journal :good:

well i came back with 4 wild angels and added them to the leopoldi group so now ive got 12 angels in my tank.... im gonna see how it goes before removing anything as they are all still under 3 inch.
