Hi everyone

Yesterday i introduced 3 Pearl Gourami, and 6 young marble angelfish into my just fishless cycled 260L aquarium.(They are my first fish)
The reason i got 6 angelfish was to wait until 2 pair off then rehome the other 4.

Anyway iv been closely observing them today and notice the smallest angelfish out of the 6 only uses 1 gill.
The other gill appears to be slightly pushed in. (caved in so to speak)

Hes seems normal, ate find today and shows normal behaviour apart from the fact that the 1 working gill he does have seems to be working overtime.

The closed off gill isnt red or swollen, doesnt show any signs of infection.
He doesnt have any signs of ich, fungus, bacterial infection and he isnt flashing!
He looks and acts perfectly normal apart from the other gill breathing fast.

Does anybody know what this could be? Is there anything i can do for him?
And most important of all, will he be ok?

Ammonia is 0
Nitrite is 0
Nitrate is 10
and PH is 7.6

Thank you for your help

Maybe that is just how he is? If he is behaving naturally then there shouldn't be a problem...

Could be a damaged fish too. Clean water, watch your stats and watch the fish. Sometimes there is just the odd fish that the LFS did not noticed was injured or damaged.

Gill defects, especially on younger angels are mainly genetic. Some fin issues are environmental.

Yea I thought that it may be down to being damaged or gentic.
If it has been damaged will it heal in time or will it always be like this?
Im wondering if it was the pet store clerk who bagged them for me. Lets just say she wasnt gentel!

You should have told her, "steady now, we don't want to be damaging my fish."

Anything is a possibility.

Yea i should have
Well the angelfish still seems fine and i can even start to see some faint breathing from the injured gill so things are looking good

Great, hopefully it will look completely normal soon then! :D
