We have a tank cycling at the moment.

Its 125 litre (33 US Gallon)
33" long - 20" tall - 15" wide

We really want a community tank - with pretty fish - not just the usual neons / guppys etc

My fiance has her heart set on angelfish

can we?

What could go with them?

(she doesnt like plecos - ugly apparently - I quite like them  )

yup you can fit angels in there and tank mates it depends on what you want???

what do you have in mind big or small fish

bright

weird

:(

As long as you just put two angelfish in there it should be fine! More than two angelfish could be a problem because of the chance you could have a pair... And the third angelfish would become a victum of the pairs teritorial aggression.... Cory cats are a nice tank mate for angelfish... Do try and avoid fish with "nippy" personalitys such as puffers and tiger barbs... Some tetras may be nice... Danios and other fast moving fish may be a little much for angelfish to handle...
Glade that you are thinking about angelfish! I just love mine and hope you have fun with yours as soon as you get them!

As the 2 before said, two is fine, and depending on the size you can have other fish in there of different sizes. Why don't you look at your lfs (or online, whatever works best, but you have to make sure your lfs has it!!!) for intresting fish and come back and tell us what it is and maybe we can help you better, If you want you can make a list of fish you like! :D

I have had my 30 us gal. tank for about six months now with 2 Angels. I have them with black skirt tetras, spotted cories, and two red fire dwarf gouramis. They have done perfectly fine together so far. Although I don't think all Gouramis are as compatible with them as the Dwarfs are.

That has made my day.
I think angelfish are stunning.

Ok - I am off across the net looking for some other fish to stock up the tank with that get on with angels - no nipping - no being eaten!

I'll be back :hey:

Ok here is a little list: (excuse the comments!)

Neon (1.5" school) - (vivid red/blue - small dart shaped)
dwarf rainbows (2.5" school) - (quite nice- standard body shape -blue to yellow grading)
dwarf gouramis(2.25") (diamond/oval shaped- stunning blue red diagonal markings)
cory cat fish (the little fellas!)
otocinclus for algae control (1.5") (silver with single black sripe down length, nicer than pleco-smaller too)
Blue Paradise Gouramis (4") (snazzy looking)

These have been recommended - what do you guys think?
Please include numbers - like a mock tank set-up as that would be really helpful.

Oh and the neons....apparently if you add them to the tank first and when settled add a couple of juvenile angels - they dont recognise them as food and will live together. Do it the other way round and the angels will kill them all!

We will be upgrading our tank again in about 2 years - probably to a 55gallon so growth of fish shouldnt be a problem, just need to ensure tey arent all going to eat each other within a month LOL !

I have never had any luck with Angels in my community tanks.Guess i must have just been either lucky or unlucky for the other fish involved but i always end up with a pair and once they start breeding all H*ll breaks out in the tank

They'll eat the neons once they're big enough. Gouramies are fast and can be aggressive but this doesn't apply to all. The occupy the same area of the tank as the angels and that can cause problems if you have breeding on either side.
Cories are lovely, although you want to avoid the small species. Otos might end up being lunch too so..... :/
I can tell you what mine live with if you like. It might help. I don't have any trouble or fighting within my tanks so....
Anyway. One angel lives in my 55g with endlers and platies. If does hunt down and eat the fry...which helps keep the numbers down. Some do escape and grow up. Oddly, considering the size on male endlers and the fry they are better survivors then the platie fry! It also lives with two striped doras, two yoyo loaches...which do occassionally get a little over excited for the angels liking and a syno angelicus.
The other lives in my 44g alongside my lady bettas, cories, peach spot plec, syno decorus and three syno petricolas. Again there's no trouble. The only time he/she gets aggressive is when I do a tank clean. He/she hates the tube and thinks it's very funny to bite my hand while I work. Which goes to show a level of intelligence as he/she knows attacking the tube is pointless and that it is controlled by me.

P.

I've heard the same about angels and neons. Am not sure personally that I would risk it. Perhaps try cardinals - they get bigger - introduce them, wait for them to grow a bit, add the angels as juveniles. They look really similar to neons. Still a bit of a risk though, apparantly - I've never tried so can't really comment.
I'd suggest that whatever schooling fish you choose will have far more impact if you get more of them. So I'd suggest going with one type of schooling fish. They will be happier and they will look better.
Cories are lovely. They do best with sand substrate or at least something fine and rounded as they snuffle through it. Get a group to keep them happiest.
Dwarf gourami are nice, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't get on fine with the angels and everything else.
Rainbows - don't know much about them; I'm not a huge fan of them myself.
Oto - as with rainbow fish. You don't need something to keep the algae down from the glass etc - you can just use an algae scraper as part of your normal cleaning regime. Up to you if you wnat one becuase you want an oto though!

With the dwarf gouramis - should I get one or two or more?

2x Angels
2 dwarf gouramis
12x cardinals

that sound ok or that way overstocked? As I say we will be getting bigger tank in a year but dont want to overstock the tank in any case

Yeah that should be fine. If you only get two dwarfs make sure they're the same sex! If you end up with a male and a female the male will chase her mercilessly once they're old enough to spawn. Alternatively have one male and 2+ females.
Hugs,
P.

Should I add the angels and gourami at same time or in which order?

and many thanks for the info so far :D

Normally I'd recommend getting the dwarf gouramis first but being that this is a newly cycling tank I don't recommend it here. They are very sensetive to new tanks and are best introduced once the tank filter is mature. Usually around three months all being well. So I'd say get the angels first but get youngsters. And when the tank has been good and stable for a few months continueously then add the dwarfs....but aim for young adults. And make sure you have some plants for them to disappear into.
