Hi,

I'm getting a 30 gallon tank tomorrow and of course am already day dreaming about stocking options. I don't know the exact dimensions of the tank however. oh and don't worry, won't add fish till after fishless cycle.

is it ok to just get one angelfish? or are they unhappy unless they are in a pair? If i can get an angelfish what is the smallest size fish that can go in the tank? which fish should be avoided on account of fin nipping.

I'd really like german blue rams also. Their profile says a 10 gal minimum? is that actually possible or is the water quality too difficult to keep undercontrol for them. also can you keep one instead of a pair? because then i could have them in my 10 gal (currently cycling) and save room in my 30.
With GBR and angels..what do you do if you don't want the fry? i don't know if any lfs would take them..there is only one lfs around here that actually knows anything about fish..

GBR and angels are both african cichilids so would they require similiar water params?

I'd really like to get driftwood. i like the look of it a lot..but where on earth do you find this stuff? I think the one good lfs around here doesn't even have it.

Thanks a lot for your help and time!

You could have 2 angels and 2-3 GBR in a 30 gallon. There are several schooling fish that can go with angels. Most tetras, danios, some barbs. It just depends on what you like. To avoid having fry just simply get the same sex pairs. Male angels and rams aren't bad for being aggressive towards each other, unless there is a female involved. The only thing is that angels are much hard to sex then rams.

Angels and rams are new world cichlids, meaning they are from either central or south america. They both share the same water params, so there won't be in trouble in that area.

when full grown angels can be very aggressive and 2 together would ***** all the time if they didnt pair off.
GBR's should be kept in even numbers so 2 max, and you would have to wait for the tank to mature (6 months+)
GBR's and angels will prefer higher temperatures (27-28oC) for their metabolisms to function correctly. being kept at lower temps can lead to problems such as HITH and premature death.

danios, barbs and some tetras therefore should not be kept with them. cardinal tetras and rummynose tetras normally do well because they will thrive at this temperature, this also rules out cories excluding sterbai and a few others.

keep 1 male ram to 1 female ram. theyre easily sexable. females have pink bellies and males dont. simples.

Thanks a lot guys

unfortunately the tank is only 16" tall :( so there goes angels.

and sounds like i'll be waiting quite awhile for rams.

i noted some of the "peaceful cichlids" posts...i'm going to check out the requirements for apistos and shell dwellers
honestly...i'm not really a big fan of most cichlids, they sorta seem typical..it's these few really fancy ones that get my attention. That's the reason for trying to figure out some community compatibility.

I love the...elegance? of angels..any suggestions for other similar "centerpiece" fish

oh and the tank is 36" long x 12" wide x 16" tall.

leopoldi angels are smaller but harder to find and more expensive
I have a female german blue ram with a pair of angels. Had a male but he made it to a year and a half then the rest is history... she is pushing 2 years.
My male could get aggressive if he chose a mating area. He would attack my 11" pleco but never actually touched him, lol.

what about a gourami? honey, pearl, dwarf

my lfs actually does have leopoldi listed on their website, they are $25 though. i'll keep it in mind i guess

yea i made another topic about combining gourami species. it sounds like it can work out, so we'll see

thanks for the input
