I have two angelfish that have been getting along very well and about every 28 days she lays eggs... they have never been successful .. they always eat their eggs right away... no problem. Now the other day I noticed the female angelfish chasing the male around. I looked on the internet and assumed it was part of their mating, spawning..etc. I have two small plecos in the tank with them and they also chase the male around at times. Today I noticed the males tail is about all chewed up and mostly gone. I don't know what to do for him.. his color is very dull and he just kind of hangs out and doesn't seem interested in eating or swimming around. I have a 55 gallon community tropical tank that I put him in to see how he would do and the one angelfish in that tank chased him right away. Is there anything I can do for him? I'll be devastated if he doesn't make it.

Thanks so much!

Sometimes pairs of angels will seem to get along with few, if any squabbles, then one day one or the other goes psycho. Occasionally a death will occur, chewed up fins is the usual outcome of this aggression.

By putting the torn up angel in a tank with one other angel that has been there for any amount of time, the new angel is invading the other angel's established territory. You could try taking the angel that has been in the tank out, rearrange the tank to remove the territories, then try putting the old angel back in after the injured angel has had some time to get used to the new tank. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.

The best thing to do for the injured angel is to get at least a 10 gallon, if not a 20 gallon tank, & treat with some melafix & daily water changes. Fins grow back, often times more nicely than before due to the clean water during healing. I have a black angel in a 20 with an assortment of a few other fish that I never thought would pull through it got so beat. 3/4 of the fins missing, head & both eyes swollen. It now looks much nicer than either of the pair of blacks that pounded on it. Melafix, & most importantly, clean water is the key.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have a 10 gallon tank set up that I am going to put the injured angel in and treat it as you said to do and see how he makes out.

Thanks again!!
