Latin name being "Melanotaenia praecox" so that's perhaps where peacock (mistakingly) comes from. Please correct me if I'm wrong

Actually you are very right!!
It has many common names, Peacock rainbow fish, The blue neon rainbow, the blue rainbow.
It kinda gets confusing for me!!
This encyclopedia of fish I brought for £25 said that it was a peacock rainbow so I guess they got the peacock from the latin name
