Hi, I have a opaline gourami, rtbs and my angelfish has got finrot. Basically, when I got a gourami back from a neighbour's tank, it was kept in water that had many ph balance chemicals in it. The water went into my tank and it went really cloudy. Later that night I decided to do a full water change because my angel had quite bad fin rot. (only just now I've realised that fin rot is usually caused by stress :S) I put medication in but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. The gourami and rtbs occasionally chase it, but not very often. It is very listless at the moment, just kind of floating in the same place, but it is eating. I don't have another tank to put it in and I don't know what to do. It's also probably stressed because it's in a tank too small for it (58 litre/15 gallon). Only after I got it, I realised that the pet store is not so reliable when selling fish. It's finrot is getting worse, is there anything I can do, except try not to stress it out anymore?

What are your present water stats?
Never do a full water change it alters the stats causing stress and shock.
Red tailed shark need 40gal, and angel need 30gals.
Any red edges or streaking of the fins.
What med are you using?

I know this site is for betta but it is a very good finrot article.

I don't know, I haven't got anything to measure them with (I'm so bad at fishkeeping )
Ok, I'll bear that in mind; but what if the water is really dirty- if it's missed a few water changes.
Yeah, after doing some proper reasearch I found that out :( The shark seems ok though- I've had it a few months now
There were a few red streaks, but I think they've gone now
Interpret finrot.
I don't think it will make it to the morning though :(
Thanks for the reply

Shouldn't miss water changes and gravel vacs, the tank is already to small for the fish.
I would get your water tested,.
Red streaks is septicemia which is due to poor water quality.

The temperature is at 26 degrees celsius. The angel had minor fin rot a week or so before. But it seemed to heal up. The fin rot is really bad at the moment; about halfway through the tail and has eroded about a third of the top fin. :'(

Good news- My fish has completely healed- I am going to continue with the medicine just to be 100% sure. Its fins have grown back and it acting completely normal. :D
Also, lets say I go on holiday, or I have *loads* of coursework and the water is really dirty because I missed some water changes; do I do a big water change, and more small ones?
Also, when you add the stuff to help the filter and clean the water, do I need to dissolve in a bit of water and pour it on the surface, or do I just mix it straight in? And do I need to measure out enough to clean the whole tank, or just the water I'm adding. For almost a year I've been wondering and just doing different methods each week XDDD

Simply put, If your tank is really dirty, and you cant do the maintenance get someone who can. Any Meds or water treatments will tell you on the bottle how to add them to the tank. Most are just add to tank but some say mix in warm water then add. You add treatment or other to the size of the tank not the water added.

erm are you sure you are commited enough to your fish to keep them healthy....would you forget to clean up you cats litter box if you were busy or forget to feed your dog if you went away? Just because they are fish doesn't mean you can be any less committed to thier welfare than a cat, dog or any other pet. Sorry but with that attitude towards the fish I would rehome them.

I bet that your gourami and/or RTBS could have started the fin rot since they are good at the nipping thing, but that seems to be an afterthought that is too late.

Your RTBS may appear to be doing ok, but it is most likely stressed from the small tank and in the future, it will definitely be stressed. They get large and need room to roam. A stressed fish leads to problems like infections, parastites, Ich, and a host of others. Once one fish has it, get ready for the others to follow.

I could not agree with blackbat any more and it is not to be mean or rude, but these are living things in your home and you should be responsible for that. I guess I like to put myself in their place a little and think of how much it would suck to live in my own wastes or otherwise unhealthy water. It would be the same for you if you were placed into a small room with lots of smoke and pollution...I am sure that you would want someone to turn on the fan once in a while. Again, I am not trying to sound mean or rude but only pointing out how important all of this really is.

Hi- thanks for the replies- and yeah, I know the tank is too small, but I didn't do much research when I first got them, and its not reeaaallly tiny. My neighbour has a red finned shark thats about 7cm long in a 5-7gal? tank for over a year...which isnt actually that long, but it seems healthy enough. And I do care about my fish- last week, i was in my pjs and was about to go to bed at around 11pm, when i realised it had been about a week since my last water change- so I did a water change- sure, its not like its a big acomplishment, but its a start XD. Sorry if my writing is quite bad- but im in the middle of some coursework and just rememberd about my post XP
