nitrate: 20

I have a 4" anglefish that started being sad and not eating about two weeks ago. Then, It developed some stringy mucus around its boby. I was told that it was some kind of fungus or bacterial infection that could be treated with Maracyn, so I did the treatment. The mucus is gone, but for the past few days it has been swimming sideways or face down. Any suggestions?

Thanks

What were you feeding the angel prior to it's going off feed, and is it eating again?

Swimming sideways or in other odd positions usually indicates a problem with the swim bladder. This could be an infection, which probably would have been helped with the Maracyn if it was caused by gram positive bacteria, or constipation. Epsom salt is helpful for constipation, start with one teaspoon per 10 gallons, increasing by a teaspoon daily for a maximum of 3 teaspoons per 10 gallons.

The presence of nitrites doesn't help a sick fish, daily water changes are needed, along with increased aeration. I would consider trying Maracyn II as well, this will treat any gram negatve bacteria.
