Well I'm babysitting this angel for afriend until he gets his 40gallon in alittle. Right know he is in a planted 25g high tank with one Whisper 30 power filter. Before this I have seen him "yawn" and I didn't think much of it but know he is almost gasping for air. opening and closing his mouth and you can see his gills go up and down when he doing this. Is this a problem? He is acting normal and there is no sign of disease. Should I be worried? :/

P.S I just fed both of them half a tropical tablet for bottom feeders. They love them, but I can see little dust stuff from the tablet he ate coming out of his gills. Could this be the reason?

Thanks in advance,

DL

Did you climatise him properly.
What are your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Food does sometimes come out of the gills.

Okay I think its a false alarm. He has slowed down his breathing. He and the other have been in the tank for quite awhile know. I actually don't have a test kit but i'm getting one for x-mas. What is climatiseing? Ohh yeah the water stats should be good as I do weekly water changes.

Even doing a water change weekly dosn't mean the water quality is good.
What was your friends tank ph and temp to your tank.

Ok, without your stats its hard to say, but he shouldnt be laboured breathing, increase aeration if you can, and just keep a close eye on him for now, good luck.

Well it isn't showing any signs of illness and the breathing heavily has stopped. It could have been that he got a peice of the tablet stuck in his mouth because it has stopped know. There is no sign of internal parasites and I did a water change today and decloirhinated the water using stress coat. I'm pretty sure it was a false alarm. Well he hasnt been yawning a whole lot but ive caught him doing it acouple of times. Do I have enough aeration in the tank? The plants help with that too right? Okay I found out there is some sort of cut in his body, Ill get pictures up on it...

Fish do yawn, ok it could of been the pellet, good luck.

Thanks Wilder! The fish looks like he lost acouple scales possible from being frightend and hitting the drfit wood. I but some stress coat into the tank and the area already looks better! He has better breathing aswell. Ill keep my eye out for anything bacterial from the scales being gone, If there is anything I am going to the LFS tommorow and on Friday. Thanks for your help!

Losing scales can boik down to a number of things, bacterial to parasite, and knocking them off on ornaments and such.
Any sign of him darting around, or flicking and rubbing.
Check with a magifying glass to see if you can see a parasite where the scales have gone.
Any white edges around the scales, any sores or pierce marks on the fish body.
Check the gill area to see if there any changes in appearance.
