I heard of people keeping angels in tanks as small as 20 gallons succesfully, but Im a bit reluctant. I want a "centerpiece" fish for my 29 gallon tank that will be heavily planted. The other tank mates will be 7-8 female bettas and possibly coolie loaches. Do you think a single angel would be ok? (i know it sounds like a heavy bio load but its heavily planted and heavily filtered and small frequent water changes thanks to this gravel cleaner which actually makes water changes effortless and simple, I actually enjoy doing them now!)

sounds allright to me just check on how they get along guess you will just have to try it

Coolie loaches get seen as food,
I think my plec has mucnhed on mine!

what are your dimensions?

and angels preffer to school with 1 or 2 others

and the kooile loach will be eating as the angels grow.

uh no angels do not like to be in groups of 2-3 they are cichlids so they need to be in groups of 6 by themselves or a mated pair otherwise they will fight trust me i know and yes i have heard of that the kuhlis wil get eaten by ange;s

I have had an angel all alone in a 30 gallon with other smaller fish. it grew just fine and had plenty of room. They are pretty stationary fish. they don't move too much. I like raising them from about an inch and have other fish that might live well with it and they live just fine.

If the fish can fit in an angel's mouth, it has the potential to be eaten. A single angel will do fine, beyond that you need either a mated pair, or a larger group, 6 or more. Mated pairs will squabble, one has been known to kill the other. In a larger group the aggression is spread out more. With a single angel there is no other angel to be aggressive towards.

A single angel will work fine in a 29 as a centerpiece fish, as long as you choose tankmates that are too big to be eaten. Avoid fish that are angel looking, sometimes angels will get aggressive towards them.
