my angelfish is swimming loops! i think its not doing so good but i dont know what i can do about it. he looks like hes dying! I know its not swim bladder but what could it be. it looks like its still controlling itself and not having problems but at teh same time i dont know any fish that swims upside down. i just cleaned the tank 2 days ago and have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite adn 0 nitrate.

Hi again fishy411, I've been thinking about your angelfish and I wonder if it's a metabolic disturbance?? If you haven't any catfish/plecs, perhaps try some aquarium salt as per instructions. If you have got catfish/plecs you could try a salt bath (approx 5g per litre) in a separate container such as a bucket just used for fish. You leave them in for 10-30 mins per day then back to tank. Looking in my fish disease book, the only other reason they say is listed under "rapid swimming with rotating and whirling" could be oxygen starvation (can you measure O2 levels? or gill damage, possibly gill parasites (can you see any redness around the fish's gills?

i just checked and there was no redness around the gills so i dont think its parasites. how do i check o2 levels? i run an airstone. I think it may be a nitrate release. my mom said it was HER tank but she didnt clean it for awhile. i just cleaned it the other day but couldnt clean all the gravel at once. could some nitrates have been released from under teh gravel. this morning it doesnt seem to be having as much as problem. when i woke up it was almost on its side but now its swimming the right way. its still breathing very fast and fluttering its fins. ive got no plecs/cats in there. I dont have aquarium salt on hand so what would i use? i have kosher salt which is kind of big grains and then table salt.

To test for o2 and nitrates you really need kits from the lfs. But if you run an airstone as well as the filter I'm sure the o2 is fine. Table salt is no good because of the additives, not sure about kosher salt but I wouldn't. If the fish looks better I'd just keep an eye on it for now. Nitrates aren't as dangerous to fish and as your ammonia and nitrites are nil then it's unlikely that nitrates are a problem. Perhaps just do 10% water changes every other day to freshen the water up. Is there any possibility that the angel got knocked during cleaning? If so he/she will probably recover fine, could have just been stressed out.

as the fish was ok before the clean then i would think it has been poisoned by some toxin being released by the gravel if it was as dirty as you say it was. how did you clean the tank as your readings are 0 for everything?

i just vacuumed it. i tested the water before the cleaning. i'll test again and let you guys know
