Hello all,

my tank is doing fine and everyone is settled down nicely and the fish are loving there new home.

i have just bought two new angel fish(still small) i am wanting to know if they are better as a pair or by themselves and will they be okay in a community tank, i have been told a couple of different things about them, so if anyone has any opinions about angel fish please let me know.

thanks again

Bear.

They are usually better if they naturally pair off. As for the community tank in peaceful community tanks angels regularly get along but their flowing fins are usually alot of temptation for fin nipping fish. Angel fish should not be in the same tank as tiger barbs or other fish prone to fin nipping. Also it is also not a good idea to store Angels with neons as they become a tasty snack food when they get large enough to fit in their mouths (which will one day happen.) There are also a few tank requirements the tank needs to be at leas 18inchs tall and it is recomminded that they be kept in a 35gal+ aquarium. These little guys grow big and to keep them happy the need some space to strech their fins. I hope this helps a bit

In addition to the good advice given by a1wonder, if the tank is less than say 60-70 gal, it's a bit risky to keep them with other territorial fish, such as other cichlids or gouramis. It may work out, but chances are it won't.

Since you have bought a small pair, it's probably impossible to say if they're a male and female or not. Two males may get aggressive with each other as they grow up, so watch out for that. Two females are usually okay and may even spawn together. It is ideal for angels to pair of themselves from a small group, that way it's more certain that they'll get along fine and have no relationship problems in the future. Angels seem to have personalities with some being less aggressive than others, so you'll just have to observe them as they grow up, I'm afraid. It's a bit difficult to give any solid, "this-always-happens" advice.

As for tank size, I recommed a 50-55 gal, 20 in tall, as a minimum for a pair. People have different opinions on this, but that is the size I've come to prefer from personal experience. My angels wouldn't get along in a 34 gal, but after moving them to a 53 gal, they haven't had a single fight. :)

Good luck with your angels. :)

thanks alot for your opinons guys,
they seem to be fine the now, i will have to wait and see when they get a bit bigger. my tank is 40 gallon so it is a fair enough size. i will keep you informed.

thanks again.
