Hi All

I have two angel fish and they both act totally different. The first one put in loves to swim around and comes up to eat as soon as you put the food in. The other one spends most of its time hiding at the top of the tank behind the temperature sticker. It does come out occasionally but doesnt attempt to feed straight away like the other.

Could it be that the other is bullying it and would getting another angel help?

What size of tank do you have ? Also what other tank mates do you have ? I was advised to buy them as a group and wait for them to pair off. It sounds like the one that's coming to feed is the most dominant one and the other one knows not to try and fight with it for food .

Have you noticed any aggresion between them ? It looks like the do a little dance with each other there ventril's will also appear very rigid and they may also "Kiss"?

Hi there, thank you for replying :)

The tank is roughly 1foot deep, 2ft2 high and nearly 3 foot long. It is only the two angels and a silver shark in there with a fluval filter and extra air. Someone has said that you should have a minimum of 3 as of the dominance.

When I first put them in the bigger one did pick on the smaller one but they seem to get on fine now. Although sometimes when the smaller is out the larger swims around with it rather closely but not actually attacking...

If it was me i'd go buy another 2 that were of similar size to the 2 you already have . Bag the 2 existing one's while acclimitising the new ones and give the tank a wee re-jig about that way they'll all have to find new territory and should lessen out the aggression . I would never advise to keep them in an odd number because if they pair off you'll be left with a lone angelfish who will probibly get picked on by both pair's if they decide to breed

You got a Full Tank Shot ?

:D

Not yet, will have to though :) Its the tank that the previous property owners left with one silver shark in. I brought the two angels to try and give the shark some company. He has come out a lot since... Will go and get another two angels as soon as I can. Also plan on turning down the fluval as they have it on quite a strong flow I noticed yesterday and I know angels dont like that.

Also, want to upgrade to a bigger corner tank so once the front room is painted I shall be buying another to start cycling... :)

I've had 6 angelfish since the start of the year, and which ones did i have to replace?
the docile ones, i lost one when i put in worming medication and another one just never bothered with food, another never got past being a baby, all bought because they looked sweet and gentle.
i again went to the LFS looking to get a black Angel but they where all being bullied by one zebra who was smaller than the rest.
even though i already had a zebra i got this smaller guy, even though he's a baby in the tank with 2 bigger angels that have paired off he only let them bully him for the one week they were mating.
as nice as it was to have my first angel as big docile sweety, i think there has to be a reason they are docile,
and i believe one side of that coin is not being well to start off with.

I hope your Angel gets its appetite back, not eating is a sign of bacteria/worms/consitipation and other things.
members have suggested cooked pea's without the shell to improve bowel movement, and i now use it fortnightly, my catfish loves them.

I would get another angel if i where you.
also members would like to see your stats, ph temp amonia nitrite nitrate.

I had the stats tested at the LFS and they are all 0 and PH is at 7.5... all within the limits of a healthy and normal tank they assured me...

there is not an awful lot of confidence in LFS assurances.
pick yourself up a API master test kit on ebay.
and another angelfish or two and a tall plant or ornament to hide behind (not for u to hide behind, the fish to hide behind).
my black angelfish put itsself up against the black tube & the black temperature sticker ( he must have known he was the same colour)
when he was bullied, he never bothered to get out of the way of the other angels and never ate till he passed away.

I will go and get another two angelfish at the weekend to try and help. I was at the house all day today as waiting in for deliveries and am pleased to report that the angel spent most of the day swimming around the tank AND eating :) Maybe he was just taking a while longer to acclimatise
