AngelFish are cichlids - moved.

There are a few things you need to get figured out before you decide to breed angels. You will need a home for 200+ small fish if you are successful. Most shops won't take angels unless they are at least dime size, and each dime size angel needs a half-gallon of water to grow properly without deformities, nickel size angels need a gallon each. Now, do the math, and figure out how much tank space you need for growing out.

You will need to set up a bbs hatchery; you will have little if any success without it. Live food triggers the feeding instinct of the fry; many including myself have tried doing without it at first. Learn from the mistakes of others.

A 10-gallon is not large enough for a pair to spawn in, they are vertical spawners and the water just isn't deep enough for the pair to make a good pass on a vertical object to spawn & fertilize. A bare bottom 20 high is the minimum needed for a pair, and you need to remove the spawn, not the pair. Moving the pair will often put them off spawn for a while, and in a small tank like a 10 there is a good chance that there isn't enough space for them to feel comfortable enough to spawn. Many pairs do bicker, and in a small tank this could be disastrous for the weaker member of the pair.

Your best bet is putting a divider in the larger tank with the pair having one section to themselves. Pull the spawn and hatch it in the 10 gallon, you should be able to keep them in there for 2-3 weeks depending on the size of the spawn. You can go with a 20 or 29 after that, a few weeks later you will need to split them up again, or put them in a 55.

I've been hatching in 2.5-gallon tanks lately, and transferring the fry to a 10 or 15 after 5-7 days. I add 7 drops per gallon meth blue, 2-4 drops per gallon acriflavin, and 3 drops per gallon Maroxy to the hatching tanks for years now. On the 3-4 day after hatching I start doing 50% water changes daily, if I sense a problem I go up to 90% daily. They get at least 50% daily for the first two weeks, then I back down to 50% every other day. After about 6 weeks they are getting 50% weekly, more or more frequent water changes if I sense any problems.

Trying to explain fully how to breed angels over the internet is like trying to teach someone how to do a triple lutz online when they have bought a pair of ice skates. In both situations you have to bounce off your backside a few times before you start to get it right.

thank you it was really helpful and knowledgable ... and now that i know and can go from there ... i really apprecate the step by step and need to get another tank for grow out .... so i can use few tanks to do that
:good:
