hello there,

I have an angel fish in a tank with several guppy's and a molly, now i want to populate my tank with guppies/mollies/plates, except everytime my fishes's give birth the angel fish darts in and eats the fry before i can remove them. have tried removing the guppy's before birth but they got too stressed out and started having still borns.

I think the time has come to find a new home for my angel, such a shame as it is a nice fish.

Will consider swapping it for some livebrearer or betta's.

anyone intrested PM me, will not post so have to collect/deliver in the tyneside area (UK)

Have you tried asking your LFS if they will swap your fish? That's what I do when my fish out grow the tank. :)

Or, try the Buy, Sell and Swap topic.

The angel is definatly eating the fry but bettas won't be much different either and only female bettas would be suited to a community tank- the females would fight and stress out the male and 2 males would fight to the death, a single male betta wouldn't be happy in a community tank and would find it very difficult competeing it for food or staying out of other fishs way.
Mollys, platys and guppys can produce huge amounts of fry and mollly fry take a year to mature and the fry will realy need their own large tank when born as mollys eat fry alot, even their own. I'd advise you to read the pinned articles on livebearer breeding in this section as they'll be alot of help if you want to breed livebearers. Mollys need alot of space even if they don't grow very big- how many fish and what types do you already have and how many gallons is your tank?

not much left in my tank.

only the angel, 3 guppies (1 m 2f), a ballon molly and a common pleco. oh and a tropical frog (with 3 legs)

not sure what the tank holds gallon wise, but the dimensions are roughly 4ft x 2ft x 2ft.

only want livebearer as a self replensing system.

but need to get rid of my angel first!!!!1

Many livebearers are already very inbred and inbreeding has drastically weakened many of them and led to all sorts of genetic disorders so if you want to breed them responsably you need to keep an eye on who's breeding with who and that nobodys breeding with any relative fish as they will do that if you don't keep an eye on them.
You also need to find out wether your frog is an african dwarf or clawed frog as its a clawed one they can eat fry and even adult fish.
Im not good at working gallons out myself so you will have to do that but common plecs can get to just under 2ft long and live for over 30yrs so although your tank is a fair size you wont have much stocking space left by the time its full grown.
The minimum amount of females to male is for your average livebearer is 2-3females per male although its more if you have more than 1male, more like 6-7females per 2males etc.

I'm not going to butt in too much, since Toxis seems to be doing a great job, so I'll just pop in and say, by those dimensions, your tank is about 119 US gallons. Or 99 UK gallons. :)
