Hi All i have an angel in my tank at the moment that is acting VERY badly he was lying on his side this morning not moving and barly breathing, he is resently floating on the tide around my tank with his mouth right near the top of the tank getting air every now and then.

he was fine last night when i went to bed , but now hes all over the place only thing i have done recently is a normal water change, the water is all normal in terms of Ph etc i checked this last week when i water changed it, there is only one other fish in the tank which is a bottom feeder who is showing no signs of anything wrong, also tank temp is 82 deg c

his mate recently died (around a week ago) again found him on the bottom of the tank dead in the morning, but this one has shown no signs of anything so far all i have noticed so far is right next to the base of his fins its all red as though its bloodshot.

attached is a screenshot of him

please help me although he has killed every fish i have owned he is a charector on his own!!

circled in green is where his fin is and that is bright red in real life

Stats would be good.
He has a bacterial infection septicemia hard to cure once it has progressed.
Can you issolate the angel for treatment.

thanks for the quick reply, i am getting the water stats again now, cannot find what i wrote them down on last week. i cannot isolate the angel unfortunatly..... is this likly to affect the bottom feeder as well? is it contagious as i was getting ready to add more fish this weekend..

Septicemia can leak out of the fish into the tank.
I would do a water change and medicate the whole tank.
Need location for a med.
Will also need to increase aeration in the tank as meds take 02 out of the water.
Plecs are not to bad with bacterial meds more the parasites ones, as long as there plenty of aeration in the tank the plec should be fine.

ok here are the stats i have got which seem off compared to last week

broad band PH is 7
nitrite is 0.25 mg / litre
ammonia is 0.1 mg / litre
and the nitrate is really off compared to last week its 100 mg / litre whats the quickest and safest way to get this down?

Bad water quality how long has the tank been set up.

the tank has been setup for years now, never really had a water problem with it, the first angel died last week and i did a 1/3 water change as normal on the tank (this was done 2 days after the death of the first angel), checked the water and everything was normal according to the kit. before i have had chance to retest the tank i found him like this...

Need to look at the tank size in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.

If the tank been set up a while need to look at your maintainance routine.
What filter are you using.
Do you do gravel vacs.

Can you answer the above questions posted before I did.

hope this helps

-the tank has been setup for at least 4 years with no real problems the tank gets a 1/3 water change every 2 weeks or if there is a problem with the levels in the water.
-tank is 18 Gallons
-there are 2 fish in the tank at present an angel fish and a plec bottom feeder.
-i`m using a fluval 2 filter ( came with the tank ) also gave that a good cleaning out on the weekend (nothing to extreme though)
-i have a very fine gravel down as a base you could almost call it sand no under gravel cleaners etc i normally have to use a hand held vac to sift through it to clean it.
-also have an air pump on the back of the tank

Angel fish really need 30 gallons.
Right could do with a bigger filter like a fluval 3.
Did you over do the sponges and did you wash them in old tank water.
I would do weekly water changes.
If stats been off for a while old tank symdrome.

not a lot i could do about the tank size as they were bought and put in the tank as a surprise present for me ......

was considering a new filter this weekend anyway as this one seems like its on its last legs anyway.

just found out as well that after i had given the filter a clean the GF came in behind me and gave it a rinse with tap water !!!!! checked it now and its looking normal ( as it would normally when i cleaned it but could this be the cause of the problem?

also thanks for the advice on the water change i was under the impression it should be done every 2 weeks.
not really had any problem with the stats in the past lat problem i had was around 12 months ago when the ammonia went up quite high but i got that down to normal.

what would you suggest as the best course of action to try and restore my poor angel, or is it more likly by the morning he will no longer around??

If he rinsed the sponges in tap water the tank is cycling again.
Not good for the fish as the bad water quality won't be helping.
For him to stand a chance need a bacterial med.
