Hi everyone,

This is a bit of an emergency, my two black (solid black) angelfish have just layed eggs in my 4 foot tank, on a big leaf on one of my plants, WHAT DO I DO!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!??! I have no sponge filter, no small heater, (just a 250 watt spare one) and iv only got 1 small tank, which is my hopsital tank, which now is home to 7 wee guppies until i set up my outdoor guppy tank, its only like 5 gallons or so, and i have no idea what to do!?!?!?! There is only about 50 eggs, instead of "Between 100-600 eggs" according to several sources. Can someone please help me i dont know what to do, and the angels are fighting off my golden barbs, so far there isnt too much trouble which is relieving, but it doesnt matter anyway if i cant bring the fish up, because i dont know what to do. Only 4 of the many (or can you say 50 is many when there should be 100s) eggs are "infertile" which i spose is good for a first time, do i remove them, or will the mum and dad? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you dont have a spare tank there is not alot you can do apart from leave the eggs with the parents and if its their first spawn they will most likely eat the fry as soon as they have hatched (mine do). If you want them to raise the fry themselves the angels are best in a tank on their own, or you can remove the eggs and raise them yourself. Now you know you have a breeding pair you can get yourself a little fry tank and be prepared for next time they spawn. Its really exciting seeing your fish spawn.

Well i have the little hospital tank to use, i can just move the guppies. Im thinking about doing this (i need help and opinions) I want to cut the leaf off the plant, and move it into the hospital tank, and take the parents with it, to care for the babies in there. Couple of questions, do the eggs need to be acclimitized to new water? The water is practically the same, but there are things different in the water that cant be measured? Secondly, when do i take out the parents? Do i do it when the eggs hatch? Another thing, it might not matter, but i recently just moved my 2 black angels to the big tank, just a week ago, they were in my 30 gallon with the gouramis and other angels, and the reason i moved them was because they were always fighting with my other angels (which are gold), and they could have been fighting because they were protecting eggs, which i didnt see. The light in that tank is very weak compared to my other tanks, so i might not have seen the eggs, so im not sure if they're n00bs :)lol:)at doing it or not, so idk about them eating the fry. What do you guys think about that. (dont forgot to answer my questions if you can)

I doubt cutting the leaf off and moving the eggs and parents will work as they chose that specific spot to spawn. The same with moving them once the fry have hatched I belive the parents would just eat them. If the fry do hatch you can syphon them into something then put them in the smaller tank, or you can cut off the leaf and move it on its own. If you cut the leaf with the eggs on you will need either an airstone or the flow of the filter (preferably turned right down) onto the eggs to re-create the fanning from the parents and you will have to remove any eggs that turn white yourself. As for fighting with the other angels its possible because they had formed a pair, but from what I have read black angels are supposedly more aggressive than other strains, I cannot confirm this as I have never kept black angels but I have a zebra and marble pair in a tank with others and they dont fight even when they are guarding eggs (a little chasing but thats about it). If the pair are confident once the fry hatch they should rear them ok for a couple of weeks or so, but first spawnings usually get eaten (and second and third till they get the hang of it).

You don't need an expensive tank for raising fry. A cheap plastic crate with lids costing around £ will do nicely as long as yiou have a filter and heater, which can be bught cheaply on Ebay. I use plastic crates as emergency hospital and quarantine tanks and even kept outdoor coldwater fish in huge crates over winter

Hi all, something bad happened over night, i dont know how, or why, but all my eggs have disappeared. :-( No more.... Does anyone know who might have eaten them? It doesnt really matter now but just out of interest.
